Welcome to the site. What esc and car are we talking about? 4wd is more strain than 2wd. I'd say yes to a 4wd esc on 2wd.

For a 2wd to 4wd, compare the specs. They usually go by "A" or amp ratings.

As Chewy said, 4wd's require more amperage due to more strain put on the motor because of the additional drivetrain components. You're spinning two more wheels and tires as well. So as long as your new ESC can handle the same amp draw, you should be ok. Simply listing what RC it is and what ESC you are thinking of using will help us answer your question. Most ESC manufacturers will put vehicle type recomendations in the description somewhere.

Is it possible to use a 2wd esc in place of a 4 wd esc
Welcome to the RCT fold.
With the right gearing, motor, resistance, and voltage, you can move a lot of weight. The short answer to your statement/question is, yes. Like the others have asked for... details are needed to further evaluate your possible happiness/sadness outcome.
