does my gyro need to be centered?

As long as its centered the width of the car I think you'd be good. Lengthwise I image you'll probably feel some minor differences in reaction as the rear end swings. I would try it as close to absolute center as possible, then move it up as far as possible and back as far as possible, and take a few laps in between each. From there decide whether you prefer it forward or back, and start working back towards center until you can find the perfect spot.
