Get this, and you won't regret it. Almost all those cheaper ones only last a few jobs, and then the tip says, 'Forget it, I'm out.

I used to use that one. Hammie down from grandpa and probably 20 plus yrs old. Still works but takes way too long to heat up. Upgraded to a cheap 90w station and I solder alot better. But to be fair @paytonimusrex is looking for a portable one for the track and back.

Most tracks I've been to have a power strip to plug into. I have no issue with mine heating up after 5 plus years of use. Maybe you need to change the tip?
Bad tip = inefficient heat transfer

Most important factor(s) in soldering iron life are:
  • You must have two complete sets of soldering equipment
  • One for regular solder
  • One for lead free solder
  • NEVER use your lead free iron with lead based solder
  • NEVER use your lead based solder equipment with lead-free solder
  • Never use lead based solder on stuff that was soldered lead-free
  • Never use lead-free solder on stuff that was soldered with lead based
OK, so you could accomplish that by have one solder station and keep changing tips. I tried that 30 years ago, gave up. I have two solder stations and they are clearly marked which is for lead-free and which is for lead based.

Or, if you only solder twice a year, you can let them get mixed up and just buy new ones regularly.

I prefer lead based solder for everything except water pipes!
The lead free stuff manages to flow ALL around what I'm trying to solder up pretty much every time I try to use it.
I use a 60/40 with rosin core and its served me well for decades.
Sure, I've got a bit of brain damage but honesty, who doesn't these days? 🤫
