Guy's. I need help with my computer.
I currently have windows 98.
Is there a Windows XP upgrade that will upgrade from Windows 98??

I see that they sell an upgrade, I just need to know if it will upgrade 98 to XP.
Thanks in advance.

I sent you a pm

They make an upgrade.
First evaluate your PC to see if you will be doing yourself any favors.

depending how old your system is, and if your on 98 I'm guessing fairly old..

instead of spending $100 on a windows upgrade put another $100 or 2 into a new dell system or a used ebay system with xp already loaded ......as ed's getting at if you have a older system it may not run on it ...or run very slowly

dell has one for like 299 complete.. our not onna be happy with a computer running xp that originaly ran 98.. its gonna be slow as a wore out .15 on a all aluminum maxx..

Depends on the system at hand and your needs. If the system is greater than 366mhz with at least 256mb ram, and at least a 20gb drive, you're alright. Keep in mind, XP will NOT install on a system with less than 64mb ram.

Personally, I've got XP Pro SP2 on a Thinkpad 600E (366mhz pentium 2, 288mb ram, etc). Works nicely for browsing the internet, doing email, keeping track of expenses, listening to music, burning off mp3 cds for the car stereo, etc.

If gaming, on the other hand, ponying up and buying a new rig is the only way to go.

edit; Forgot to mention; the full version of XP will allow you to upgrade from Win98 (first OR second edition)... You have to boot into windows 98 and insert the disc in windows. It gives the option to upgrade there.

However, if given a choice, I'd recommend a fresh install. Far less problems.

OK.
I have it installed.
I had window ME.
I had plenty of room and was well ahead of the requirements.

Thanks guys. I'm up and running again, now on XP.

They require 128 with a minumum of 64. It says 64 might not work in some cases.
I have 256 and it's working fine.

just a little hint.. you can do a "full install" with the "upgrade"disk.. you just have to make sure you have a cd of a previous version of windows on hand..

Ratzo, I see another 256 chip in your future. Yeah, it will run on 256 but it will run way better with 512. Started off w. 256 myself, and glad I bought the second chip. Try running Photoshop or some other RAM hog and see what happens.

Yes. I can see a trip to Staples will be in order.

Do not update 98 to XP.

Terrible thing to do since they 98 and XP are so different.

Make a reformat (you will loose data unless you put it on another hard drive) and start fresh.

For XP, you should have more than 256, it will smooth things out.

Somthing like a 500 mhz PII will get the job done.

Currently, i'm rocking 2 GB :smoke: +++ E-penis

You posted this a few minutes too late.
I upgraded from windows ME (my mistake)
But I'm now upgrading my laptop from 98 to XP.
The laptop was empty except for 98.
I had nothing in it.
