Castle creation sw4 esc and 3800kv motor ok for a slash 4x4 LCG

3300kv or lower for 4x4 IMO. 3800kv will probably get pretty toasty quick. My VXL-3S hits 140F after 5 minutes of running in my slash 2wd with 23/86 gearing on 3S.
 
I ran a sidewinder4 and 5700kv motor system in my 2wd slash. You are good to go even on 3s. I ran mine on 3s constantly and never had transmission problems
There is much less torque in a 5700 than in a 3300. That’s why you didn’t have tranny/axle/diff problems. Also, not nearly the driveline loss on a 2wd, maybe why it didn’t fry on 3s. I still don’t know how you had long term success though. My 3500kv‘s in my 2wd Slash’s back in the day still ran way too hot on 3s with moderate gearing. For 3s in an LCG 4x4 I typically agree with:

Anyone running anything like a 3800 or higher kv in that truck will absolutely, positively start frying things on 3s unless they are super careful, never run on grass or in mud, and generally just don’t bash. For speed runs on high grip/no drag surfaces (blacktop/pavement/cement) the motor might survive a little while. For a good old fashioned grass bash you better gear down so far it defeats the purpose and fun of running 3s.
I feel 3300 is kind of a sweet spot in my LCG 4x4 Slash. It runs fast and cool on 3s. Freedom to make a much wider range of gearing choices. Lots more torque though. Upgrade your axles immediately (I love the Tekno M6 dog bone conversion, gives you bigger carrier bearings, too) and upgrade the diffs when they fail. Keep your slipper clutch instead of upgrading to a center diff and beef that up a little.

It depends on the gearing. If you are upgrading from a brushed Slash 4x4, then I suppose the stock gearing would work (11/54 pinion/spur, 12/47 diff).
However, I would not recommend it for 3s overall. I ran the same combo in my Slash 4x4 on 2s (12/54 pinion/spur, 13/37 diff), and it was getting a little warmer than I'd like it to. Here's a video of it running if that helps:

I currently have the Castle 3200kv system and it runs much cooler and has more punch to it (still 12/54 gearing, but definitely can go higher). Here's a video of that if it helps:
With the 3200kv motor, I've never had any issues with the drivetrain (stock gears and driveshafts), but I rarely jump it, and I don't really push the throttle a lot.

Agree totally. I’ve never tried a 3200, just the 3300 after the 3500. As to the OP’s original question then yes, I feel a 3800 is too much. Your setup looks great. I’m envious of your driving style though. After I did the 3300kv motor I tested and dialed in the truck over 3 or 4 packs of 2s and it was fun. As soon as I switched to 3s it was eating driveshafts and literally everything else with a gear. I made it maybe 7 minutes or less (literally, no exaggeration) out of each of the next four 3s packs without breaking something. It’s all upgraded now, and somewhat good. I still mostly stick to 2s for bashing, but with the last two 3s fueled angry bash sessions nothing has broken. 🤞
That said, this truck is a lot more fun than it was before and runs pretty cool, even on thick grass, with either 2 or 3s.
On my 2wd Slash with the same T/A 3300kv swap it’s much harder to run 3s through it without scattering parts, even with total upgrades. It runs cool as a cucumber with high MaH/high-C 3s batteries though. I pretty much save the 3s packs for speed runs only on that truck. I like wrenching as much as the next guy, but dang….
 
I agree that the 3800 would work on 2S but not 3S in a 4WD SCT. (I didnt realize the OP had stated that he wanted to run on 3S initially). If you're racing and limited to 2S then the 3800kV would be good but if you're just bashing then a 3300kV on 3S will produce more torque and higher RPMs than a 3800kV on 2S.
