RC Driving Style
  1. Bashing
  2. Racing
so my dads birthday is coming up, and i remember some 20 years ago him having a good rc car. it was a buggy back then, but with all the advances we have had lately, I'm not sure a buggy is the best option. also it needs to be rtr, perferably under 300.

I'm a cralwer or nitro guy myself so i duno.

I've got 0 input on his driving style, but I'm fairly sure crawling is out. i want to get him something that will be fun, and not a pain in the rear to drive around the yard or some dirt areas.

I've been looking at a few models, the ta truggy4.1 brushless, buggy4.1 brushless, traxxas slash brushed 12turn... or even the sc10 in whatever variation.

so what would handle better and have more ability to go over all terrains? buggy or truggy? should i even bother with a brushed? does the vxl5 handle lipos? or brushless motor, if we decide to upgrade?

ill be buying it or ordering it tomarrow, with super fast shipping. i need it by the 20th of this month.

The xl5 will handle a lipo battery but wont be able to use a brushless motor with it. You'd have to upgrade motor and esc. I don't know off the top of my head what it costs but what about the xl5 or vxl 2wd stampede?

Do you have a trail truck? If so maybe a trail truck so you both can go trailing together and hang out a bit? Just options.

I'm not sure about any of the xl5 specs, but I think it can handle a lipo but it doesn't have a low voltage cut off and I don't think it can handle brushless motors but I'm not a 100% sure. A truggy definitely has more ground clearance then a buggy so it would be able to handle grass a lot better. Out of your choices I like the truggy b4.1 the most from looks and it being a truggy, I also like the slash a lot but I'm a brushless kind of guy.

If you need a quick answer why don't you Google the xl5 specs and find out more about it? I'm sure lots of hits will come up.

For $300, you can't go wrong with a used 4x4 vxl Slash, very user friendly while still being bad ass and very reliable/durable. Should be able to find one for around that price. 4wd will be a huge advantage over 2wd with someone who isnt really experienced with driving rc too.
A mini revo vxl is also another one Id suggest.

i do have a scale trail rig, but its definately too slow for him. i can get whatever to run with him in a few weeks if he likes it. id get him a better one, but i wana be sure hes actually gonna use it before i go and buy him a 500+ rig.

I'm kinda in a crunch because i was just told at christmas he said wheres my rc car? who knew right? if the xl5 can't handle a brushless then whats the point of a brushed traxxas? so it seems the truggy 4.1 is most likely what ill get him. ill keep looking tho, and hopefully have a model number by tomarrow.

i want to get him something new, that he can unwrap and make his own. or id just give him one of mine. :/

whats better? cause theres a zillion modles of the 4.1
Drive: Rear wheel, with steel dog bones (not CVDs)

The mini summit or erevo would be the best option for you in the price range but you won't get it shipped fast for cheap

Definitely go with a slash!!! Great truck!

Mini summit VXL. Parts are cheap, batteries are silly cheap, it's plenty fast, and will go through pretty rough terrain. As much as I love my MERV, I kinda wish I had went mini summit instead. (yeah I know I can swap parts to make it one, but the parts are 1/3 the cost of just buying one.) :D

+1 on the Traxxas 1/16 scale VXLs. Stupid fast, relatively cheap and parts are plentiful (both stock and aftermarket).

Bug Crusher Nitro Radio Grafische Monster Trucks Versie will be best for you according to your budget. This HSP Nitro Monster truck has a Nitrotek Self ontwerpte Monster Beetle Shell.

He wants an electric. Do you have experience with anything but this model? I see its all you've mentioned in your postings here.

I vote slash.

out of your choices i would go with the slash but the stampede would handle more grass and rough turane. if you wanted brushless the brushless stampede vxl 2wd is like 330$.

I'm hoping the hobby store lets me drive a few of theirs around that are sitting about the store, opened, and on display. before i buy one, and nitro would be cool ,but its definately outa his experience range. off to the store now. ill post back with what we end up getting.

test drove a slash with brushless and a metal battery it was fast enough, but i couldnt see buying the old batterys. had to go lipo. so its gonna be fast, and should be able to have some good fun with it. only reasoning on going with this over the t4.1 was the wheels are out there on a truggy, and if he makes 1 good hit on a wheel, its back to the hobby store, where as the sc10 has more bumper area lol.

ended up with a sc10rs #7047

its brushless, lipo compatable, and was priced right. with a 5000 lipo was able to get it for 350.

no outa box pic till he opens it.

$350 for all that sounds like a great deal. I'm sure he's going to love it. I'm trying to sell of my losi aftershock so I can grab a new rc, I'm torn between a truggy, sct or another mt. Being laid off sucks or I'd just go out and buy one and keep the aftershock, I do have $250 in gift cards to the lhs.
