OK so I'm stumped here, but here's what's going on with the XRay Truggy at the moment. Maybe some of you can slap me around?

I was having issues at the track with it last Wed night. It ran GREAT for 10-15 laps...albeit a bit hot at 260-280 (lower temps as I richened a bit). After that I richened it a tad more and it was not happy. Blubbering fuel all over the place and finally stalled itself. So I brought it back in, leaned it out a tad again on the HSN. Then when I went to go start it, the wheels were moving. It fired up anyway, but as soon as I put it on the ground it died. Seemed like a clutch issue after talking to a few people.

I replaced the clutch in it last night with a Blue Aluminum OFNA clutch. Went fairly smooth for my first clutch job on a Nitro. After I did the clutch, I looked up the factory settings for the 21VG bolted to it and reset everything to just start over with tuning it.

It fired right up on the bump box when I got it outside. It was running like crap (to be expected with factory settings), so I leaned it out a bit up top, and a little on the bottom. It started to get better with each little mini run in the front yard. I brought it back in to temp it again and it was running @ 220 - 230. Then it stalled again.

Now I'm back to the wheels spinning yet again. All 4 wheels now spin on the bump box.....but they are spinning BACKWARDS. There is no way I blew the clutch in this thing in like 5 min going fairly slow in my front yard. I did a few WFO passes, but maybe 2-3 of them. I'm thinking maybe the center diff is messed up? Or I fried yet another clutch.

I thought maybe the motor was being fired up backwards, and I mean I suppose it's possible....but I've been starting it the same way every time and have just started having these wheels going the wrong way issues. If and when it finally fires up the wheels stop going backwards and go in the right direction. I'm stumped here....

On a seperate note, with my buggy I seem to have it running pretty well, but if and when it stalls it seems to refuse to refire until it completely cools down, even with a new plug.

I'm getting to my wits end here.....I have read a bunch of engine tuning bibles and such, did some research....but I'm missing something here. Any of you experts have any ideas for me to try?

I'm not sure about the wheels turning backwards, nothing has changed other than the clutch shoes. I don't even think if you put the shoes on backwards the wheels would turn the wrong way.

Can the idle be lowered any to keep the wheels from turning? I'm sure you've already tried that.

Idle won't matter. It's on a Bump Box, not running yet. lol The wheels are spinning along with the crankshaft.

Ah, gotcha, it's doing while you're starting the motor. :)
What happens when you pull the throttle? Still turning backwards, just more RPMs?

I mean if you get it running and pull the throttle.

Now the really odd thing.... The box was wired backwards apparently. So it appears as though I ran few tanks through with the friggin motor running BACKWARDS. I'm such a moron sometimes.....lol

My Flywheel was being driven CLOCKWISE instead of COUNTER CLOCKWISE. Had this wheel issue not come up, I would have probably never figured it out. lol I hate my life sometimes.....

Anyway. Wheels still spinning, but I'll deal with that tomorrow. 1 problem down....a few left to go. Too many beers....and we're off to go Bowling. YAY!

HA, that's crazy, I never really thought about the motor being able to run backwards!

YOU'RE embarassed? You didn't just have to admit that you never checked the wiring on a used starter box you bought. How the F can these things run backwards? That's INSANE!

No NO I meant how the F can a Nitro motor run backwards! lol I get the DC thing. How do you think I fixed it? lol You would think the Nitro motor would put up more of a fight to fire up backwards....but these were EASY starting...the first time. Only after they got warm were they a bitch to start.

Now? Truggy fires up almost before the wheel hits it. lol

Doesn't make sense though.....unless the motor was started backwards, and then corrected itself? How would I ever get any forward momentum out of it? Very Very odd...

If the engine did fire up backwards, the wheels would be moving the wrong way. I did it with my truggy a week ago. Was a little weird seeing the truggy trying to go backwards.

Well they were going backwards a few times....then when it warmed up...they corrected themselves. It was VERY VERY odd. lol

Lol Seeing that would make me break out a crucifix and holy water yelling "the power of christ compels you". :)

Heh. heh, i did the same thing with a Duratrax box and my LRP on my Muggy....during breakin! What a bitch, switched the polarity.....amazingly it worked great afterwards.

Yeah...Universal Durtrax box here too. My first starter box...so I won't be too hard on myself. No damage....just odd results I guess. I may have destroyed the diffs in my Truggy though. They seem to be not cooperating at the moment and it won't roll free on the ground.....or I smoked the new clutch I just installed.

Looks like the source of another problem was the wrong screw at the end of the crankshaft on this motor. It was binding the clutch bell causing my wheel spinning on the bump box. One bearing was a bit gritty so I replaced those as well. I finally got it shimmed properly, and hopefully I can get some serious laps in with the Truggy tomorrow ;-) ...Now that it's not being started backwards /facepalm
