Hey Guys,

I am fairly new to the the model train hobby and I am looking into setting up a large layout. The big problem I am having is that I do not understand how to properly power everything up. I want to be able to use the TMCC functions of my trains, and accessories. Does anybody know what parts I need as well as how to hook it all up so it works properly? I have heard that you need to run your accessories on different wattages than your engines. I hope I am making any sense. I appreciate your help. Thanks again.

Tom

I run HO. How big do you want the layout? How many trains do you want to be able to run? What is your budget? What parts do you already have? Do you want scenery? Is this your first "Big" Layout?

Model Trains become even more expensive than nitro cars. You MUST subscribe to Model Railroader. They have GREAT help issues IMO. If you want, I can send you one or two of the old ones in the mail.

Answer my questions and we can go from there.

Hey Spitfire,

Thanks for offering to help. I really appreciate it. Here are the answers to your questions.

The space I have to work with is like 25 to 30 foot long, and I am guessing I can go about 6 feet wide. I am thinking about doing and L shap layout so I could walk around the inside. Basically I want to maximize my space to its fullest. This would be my first big layout. I started off running on the floor, and then to a 4x8 piece of plywood. Yes I would like to incorporate some scenery. I am looking into getting a foam cutting wire and some foam to see what I can create.

I currently have 3 engines... one Steam that is non TMCC, and 2 Diesels, both TMCC ready. I plan on adding one more Steamer. So I guess I would like to be able to run at least three maybe 4 if it is possible, but more than likely just 3.

My budget is pretty tight until after the wedding in May but after that, I would say it is pretty good. My finace is very supportive and in fact it was her idea to use part of the basement for a layout. Her thoughts are that I have spent a lot of money so far, I better use them! LOL

Right now, I have some O36 track and a few switches and crossovers. I have a couple of bridges, some tressles, and a bunch of rolling stock. You are right, Trains can get real expensive, real quick! I do not have anything for the TMCC remote operation yet, nor any power supplies. I am thinking about getting the ZW transformer with the two 180W power supplies, and then the TMCC remote kit. Other than that I do not know what else I will need. The other problem is how to wire it all properly so it will all work. I also need to come up with a track layout. I am just going to make up something, I am not into Prototypical. I just want to enjoy my trains.

I hope this information helps. Thanks again for you help.

Good job. Okay, let me process all that information! 30 x 6 is awesome space to work with! I wish I had that much.

Anyways, you're going to want to get out a piece of paper, and make a scale drawing of what you want. I usually get a small piece of paper to think out what major types of scenery I want(Mountains, rivers/lakes), and the track design. Then, I get a large piece of posterboard, make a scale(I usually do 1/2 foot for every 5 feet), and start detailing your basic layout. First, start with mountains and rivers, add track, add trees and streets/parkinglots, then add sidewalks, sewers, and buildings. Keep in mind to make everything to scale with the size of track(O in your case).

Since you're a first timer, I would start fairly small. You can always go back and add later. I try to incorperate track rather than scenery. You can do streets and models, but lay off the big things like rivers, streams, and sidewalks.

Since you have such a big area to work with, I would make a large figure 8 to go across the track. Then, I would take a circle, and go under the figure 8. Then you can add sidings and other items(Cross-overs, cross-unders, shortcuts). It should keep you entertained.

As far as making the layout, you're going to need to spend quite a bit of money at the hardware store. Determine how tall you are, and how high off the ground you want the layout. Then, buy enough 2 x 4s to stick 4 in every 5 x 6 square(Look below at paint diagram, 2x 4s in RED). Also, buy enough 2 x 4s to connect every vertical post(See diagram). Then, you're going to want to buy 5/8 in. plywood boards. I would also get a bunch of 2 in. screws. NO NAILS!!! You also need a 2 x 4 to go around the perimeter of the whole board to allow mounting places for switches and transformers. Draw a diagram and figure out where you need power connections for the track itself and switchers motors. Drill small holes there so can route wires through there easily.

For scenery, I would recommend the Woodland Scenics Subterrain foam system. Again, to make it nice, you're going to have to dish out some cash(I spent $300 furnishing my 4 x 8 HO layout!). http://www.woodlandscenics.com/index.htm Go to Foam and click " Subterrian Foam System". I would also get the DVD "
SubTerrain: Build A Layout Fast and Easy" to aid you along the way.

If you need clerification, ask for it, or PM me. I'd also like you to PM you your address to send you an issue of model railroader that had some good build tips in it.

P.S. .21, HO is smaller.

OK, right up my alley. Straight scale "O" or "O27"? O27 has third rail like Lionel.

Oh, excited now. Been a model train fan for 35 years. Man, if you could see my storage unit!

Nice tips and links Spit. I agree that your tips are great starts and info.

Ya! great info spit...
Copy and paste....Thanks for the Info I am looking at trains too complete the RC room:)

Zandor, I would start in HO scale. IMO, it's more popular(So theres more items), it's realativly cheaper, and it's easier to build.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

P.S. Revo, I don't think they make the O27 track anymore, do they?

Plaid you just like to run things over! LOL Kids, small trains... LOL

Thanks for the great info Spitfire. It definitely makes things a whole lot clearer. I do have another possibly loaded question. Now that I have the layout, how to power it all up nicely. I am looking at getting the ZW and the TMCC kit. It is going to set me back about 500 but it looks like the best bang for the buck. Also, I need to figure out all that fancy wiring, and the power controllers, and swtich and accessory controllers. Man that stuff is still got me baffled! Thanks again guys.

P.S.

Hey Revo, I am into standard O and I use the Fastrack stuff so I am still using the 3 rail. I think they make some sort of O guage flextrack that is two rail. I am going to stick with the fastrack though. I do not want to mess with adding my own ballast. Gets kind of messy. Man we have alot in common my friend. I have been messing with O guage on and off my whole life, but never seriously until I got a basement, and some space. I can't wait to start messing with this. We are just getting the basement framed out now. Take care friend.

Hey Ratzo... that was exactly what I was thinking too. What a great way to finish out the wreck room. Take care and good luck!

I'm really not into the whole remote thing. I can't help ya out there. Just remember to use multi-strand wire and nothing but it. Also, don't forget to put alot of power strips for power. I would recommend at least one transformer for each track though.

P.S. Revo, I don't have a setup right now, but I'll take a few pictures of my engines and cars! I also have a few Lionel O27 trains that my dad gave to me, but I have no track for them. Purhaps we can work out a deal for some!

trains??? Personally i never really thought adding trains fo the mix, but this could be the fix for those winter and rainy day RC needs...

anyway, my father in law is a huge HO scale nut. i would say he easiy has about 300+plus cars, engines, tankers, etc. he's a loon when it comes to this stuff

I know that he shops mostly online for his parts, and gets them CHEAP. since he's on a fixed income, and given all the new boxes that come he must be getting 1 hell of a deal.

pretty sure its 20thcenturyhobbies or 21centuryhobbies. something like that. hope this info helps out. if u guys need can't find the website, let me now and i'll ask him where he shops

I buy from Tower...they have a crapload of stuff for all scales and the brands I like.

P.S. Godale, try to stay away from the Easy-track or fast track crap. Its much nicer when you have real track. You don't have to add ballast, that's just there for looks. You do need to use some kind of padding. Thats why I recommend Subterrain. They have a foam track bed that is better than anything I've ever used.

Ok, I will take a look at the other track options. I have never bought anything online before. I am luck enough to have a train shop about 2 miles from the house, and my LHS is about 10. I kind of lucked out it that standpoint. He has everthing HO, and O, and N and Z scales as well as the giant scale stuff. He is usually at least $40 under Lionel, K-line, and MTH book prices. I will go by there tomorrow to see what I can find. Thanks

Tom

Try to go twords Atlas and Bachman(I think Lionel went out of business or so I heard.). I try to stay away from Life-Like if at all possible.
