I noticed a small thread-like object in my vision. Based on some digging around, it seems I have a retinal tear happening in my right eye. Likely the gel in my eye liquifying. I had cataract surgery on both eyes at 41 years old, which make me more susceptibleto retinal tears. This thread looking thing started a couple days ago. Now I have a black dot, which confirms the diagnosis, it is likely a tear and a hemorrhage. This is the bad sign I guess. Next phase is lighting bolts and my peripheral vision turning dark. I'm gonna try to get into a specialist tomorrow to get it confirmed and a laser treatment done I am assuming. Anybody ever go through this? I'm a bit worried.

Well the good news is the laser technology is very successful with repairing the retina. Couple weeks of minimal activity. The brain will then compensate. The best news is you're getting treatment tommorow. That's probably the biggest advantage.

I suffered a detachment/tear years ago.

First, I started seeing unusual floaters. Instead of being the usual, occasional tiny "squiggles," they were more like small black squares. Sometimes I'd even mistake them for a crow flying over. Then, while shooting a break-barrel air rifle, it suddenly looked like black ink was being injected inside my eye in a tiny, swirling stream. It continued until it completely obscured the vision in that eye!

I jumped in the truck and drove 45 miles to a hospital. They didn't have an eye expert on duty and strongly encouraged me to go by ambulance to a larger hospital in the state capitol! I did. They set me up with an appointment with a retina specialist the next morning, where I had laser surgery to repair the tear. (They later joked that I was the first person they had heard of who was transported by ambulance for the issue.)

It healed well and I have no long-term effects. The doc told me when you get to your mid-fifties or so, the fluid inside your eye gets a little less viscous and shrinks a bit. If strongly attached to your retina at this period, it can tear it. He said it likely would have happened to me regardless of the air rifle recoil.

Best of luck to you and I hope you experience the complete recovery and lack of long term effects that I did.

Not personally but know others that have had them. They are difficult because it's your vision, but the good news is all of them are still functional. They might have a little vision problem, but it works.

Are you sure you aren't getting ocular migraines. I get these and they are squiggle crescents (lighting bolts) that start in the middle of my eye then migrate outwards. They are painless and usually gone in about 20 mins. They happen when I'm tired or stressed and can be triggered by bright lights, like some idiot driving around with high beam on.

Not the actual view from my eye, this is just someone's interpretation, which is pretty close to what I see.

my wife has had a few eye surgeries, I'm not allowed in due to me making non stop lazer sounds while their trying to operate, but hers took a few different lazer shootouts, i think injections a few times, ( that was intense for me, she didnt mind it but i was freaking out)
its scary but apparently pretty standard procedures, so theres that at least, lots of aftermarket support for the eyeballs lol

Thanks for the reassurance guys. I was freaking out a bit.

That must be the lightning bolts I read about. No, I dont see that. Mine is like a a short thread that is attached a little right of its center. Both ends are loose, so as I move my eye the ends are waving around. It looks like it's swimming sometimes. At first I thought I saw a tiny fish swimming around.

A few months ago, I developed what's called "floaties" in my right eye. Looks like black fuzzy lints floating around when I move the eye around. Supposedly its rather normal as you get older.

One thing to add... the doc said it's very important to get treatment ASAP as blood can get behind the retinal tear and make it more difficult to repair.
That's what worries me. The dots are multiplying. I called a few places. Nobody that does this repair will see me without a referral 😡

Go to the ER and they should be able to refer you. Seems like that's what @desmobob did above. I would call first to make sure however, so that you don't get an ER bill for nothing. Good luck man, praying for a speedy recovery.

I was at the ER not too long ago. They gave me a referal good for a year for follow up with a specialist.

🤣 🤣 🤣 That's my boy!

Floaters are normal, they are leftovers from when your optic nerve was developing. you see them the most when looking a a bright plain background like the sky, which is irritating when flying RC planes.

A few years ago one of my buddies threw a stick into my eye which caused a retinal tear, but it was a small one, I had the same symptoms too and all they did was basically spit weld around the tear with a laser to create scar tissue so that I wouldn't have a retunal detachment later on. They numbed my eye and somehow gave me 2020 vision in that eye
