I may have found a new love, My uncle and i went out wheelin his bronco today. Pretty frickin fun man.

So my question is, I know there's alot of good rig's out there. Everybody around me keep's telling me to buy a toyota. I don't know a whole lot about wheelin truck's, so if somebody could give me a couple tip's it would be nice on the durability on some of the rig's

I've been leaning toward's a bronco since i have a dana 60 rear end, transfer case, and misc bronco part's from my uncle without a problem

I'm just not real sure how much this is gonna cost me or if it's worth parting out my truck's drivetrain.

I've so far been recomended Mid size, full size, and toyota's. I'm not to understanding on the issue's between the 3. Suggestion's?

The purpose of the rig is a all around trail rig,mud,rock,climb...etc

i had a few in my time, broncos to me are to heavy unless its the older ones where they have the short wheelbase,i had chevy trucks not bad needs lockers, but to me the best i had were my jeeps ,cj-5,cj-7 was awesome could climb anything like a damn goat in the mountain, toyotas are mean as well...

2 of the best 4WD vehicles I have been in are an old Jeep CJ5 and the old Toyota Landcruiser. Short wheelbase and compact. Both could get us anywhere we ever wanted to go.

The bigger the 4WD, the less places you are going to be able to get to.

If you go Bronco, pre 1977 is the way to go.

i had a 85 long bed chevy 3/4 ton with 15/18 welds 44" boggers 12" lift, 454 could not go anywhere but on the road and sand as lond as it was pretty flat what kind of wheeling you looking to do?hills, mud?,trails, rocks its going to be based on what you want to doa friend of mine has a old military jeep with a 4 cylinder that out climb us on any giving day, also i had another friend that had a suzuki samurai jeep with a chevy 4.3 vortech it was unreal with 33" tires so it all depends of what kind of offroading you want>>>

Strait up get a jeep! I am there cheap, reliable and easy to find parts for.

I have a fullsize truck right now and to me that thing would be a tank on any trails,I'm looking at a earlly 70's bronco (70-73) or late 60's. I would be doing a lot of hill climbs, rock's,mud, basiclly anything i could find ill climb.

Ill have to do some research on a toyota,I was told pre 84' was best since toyota switched to IFS. Is IFS any good on the trails?

Mid size is definatlly the way ill probablly go, with some of the searching I've done,i can find a bronco for quite a bit cheaper than any toyota. Most of the bronco's I've found have tire's,shocks, rear end's and transfer case mod's done to them. All the toyota's I've found have swampers and that's it for about $2000 more.

My uncle told me that a jeep would be a great ride to,but the price of making them bad ass would just about kill me,is that true?

Anything you get is going to cost a lot to upgrade.
My neighbors kid had an old Bronco 2 he gave $800 for and gave the thing hell. Took it everywhere. Not going to recommend one. Just saying you could find something cheap and have a lot of fun with it.
I have a 96 full size Bronco. Doesn't see the the woods. 'Ol lady's daily driver. So damn big I figure a person would be backing up out of places a lot. The Dak just has 30,000 miles on it and won't see the woods. (too long anyway)

I have thought real hard about getting a Jeep. Can pick up a decent one here for $1500 to $2500. Have seen some for a grand or less. They have been around forever and so many parts out there.

Always liked the older Bronco's. What are they going for where you are at?
Don't see any around here. Last one was 4 or 5 years ago. Wanted $5000 for it.
Can't remember the last time I saw a Landcruiser. Alway liked them.

Try to find a 85 Toyota. They have the full gusseted front axle. Also you will want to look into a set of birfield eliminators for the Toyota because they are notoriusly weak. I had a 69 Blazer with a 396 7 inches lift and 40's under it and I would go anywhere anyone else would. I was built to play in the deep mud but I could also crawl decent. You gotta figure out what kinda terrain you are gonna wheels on most of the time and build off that. Also if you go with a bronco find a 77 becayse that was the last of the small body and they had a Dana 44 front with disc brakes and a 9 inch rear. that is a tough combo that will hold up to a 36 pretty easily is you are smart about the skinny pedal.

Jeeps are great trail rigs or even daily drivers. Try ebay motors. I have been browsing on there for a while.

I am getting the hankering for fun rig....I own two Jeep Cherokees for daily driving....but a rubicon is someplace in my future.

GO Jeep

My two cents

Suck on the interstate though. Air whistling through the top. Roughest riding POS I have ever been in. Feel every pebble in the road...

I still want one though.

Do you like your Cherokee's Talon? Was one in the paper last week for $1200? Sounded like a hell of a deal. Saw a full size wagoner here for 18 hundred, just had 80,000 miles on it. Damn good looking truck. Dad had one. Nice ride. Rode like a big car.

I dont care I'm geting a wrangler if i can't find a rubicon in my price range. I do alot of off roading with my friends and now that i have my licence I'm lookin to do a lil of my own.

I wouldn't want to daily drive a Wrangler. Too much noise and to twitchy on the freeway for my liking. I think my old blazer with the 7 inches lift and 40's under it handles better then a stock Wrangler.

7" lift with 40 wtf where are you wheeling. I need a trail rig for hunting and just f-in around. A wrangler with a 4" lift and some 34 maby will soot me, But 40s wow your going to go through u-goints like no other.

Hi,

in 1996 I went for one of these:
http://images.google.com/imgres?img.../images?q=Toyota+FJ40&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&sa=N

Toyota... obviously... sorry for the monster link!
Nice rig, very tough on rocks and pulled a lot of stuff out of the woods...
My Dad had a defender and a newer style Landcruiser...
Problem... whenever I sunk my Toy (ota) I saw the stupid Land Rover Logo pulling me out...
with a smiling Dad behind the wheel...

And the Toyota is 7th from the top...
Nothing works today in Hibernate State!

Actualy Toyota went to IFS in 86 with a few late 85's having IFS also.

Also I wheeled deep mud and played hard and never had a problem with u joints. When you build it right then you really don't have alot of problems aside from normal wear and tear items. I would go through the truck every spring and replace all the u joints but even though I did that they were always tight when I replaced them. I built the truck to play and that was it. One time I had water over the hood of the truck on a early spring when we had a crazy fast snowmelt and the trail we were got washed out and I was the one who found out it washed out.

I do like my Cherokees....we live 2500 feet up and the last 5.5 miles are straight up and rough unpaved road. So we Wheel it every day on the way home.

I just see a Rubi coming my way soon.....somehow.

price wise a older jeep cj-5 if your a small guy cj-7 if your bigger guy most jeeps come with the 258ci straight six if you get the trans with the granny gear(compound 1st) all you need is a set of lockers this thing stock with locker will go anywhere as long as ground clerance permits, price around lift kits for jeeps are simple all you need to do is fip the axles they come stock mounted above the leaf springs flip them around re-weld the leaf perches to the top of the axles extend the brake lines and maybe some extended shakles and you got very cheap lift it should give you around 4-5 in. of lift or maybe even 6" then youll be set......
