Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. I felt stupid asking the question... but I really had no idea. Thanks again for the help guys.

I freeride so no standard helmet will suffice, so I use an M2R Revelation X3 MX helmet. A tad bit heavy, but this noggin is too important to trust anything less.

I had the same idea.. but the CEO had me on a budget. I looked at the next step up from the helmet I ended up with and the salesman said the only difference was the amount of vents... which can be very important... but he said structuraly (sp?) the helmets were the same.

Structurally equivalent to an MX helmet? Or no?

MX helmets are DOT approved. I didn't pay nearly as much for mine as I should have. 50-75 bucks was all. It's a 250 dollar helmet..granted it was bought in 2005 and on clearance. Its got plenty of ventilation for me, with the scoops and the openness of the face. Plus my Oakley goggles fit well with it.

I free ride on all my local trails. Been through some pretty gnarly stuff too. Drop offs, 65 degree off kilter hillsides with a blind stiff lefty 90 at the bottom and a 50 foot shear drop off right in front (thank god for Hope Moto disc brakes). And I ride a Cannondale Scalpel.

No... not as compared to an MX helmet..... I meant that between the two Giro helmets I looked at the two only differed in price and number of vents. The salesman said both helmets provided the same level of protection. I was not comparing them to an MX helmet. The salesman did say that both helmets were not DOT approved. Cannondale... thats a nice bike! I only bought a Trek 3900... hopefully it will hold up!

Oh dude, the Cannon is a niice ride. As it's name implies, it handles scalpel sharp. The Lefty carbon fork rocks too.

You got a great bike Dale. You didn't ONLY buy Trek, you also a got Gary Fisher designed frame too. G/F is/was one of the best bikes money could buy at one point in time. Trek recently bought them out and still carries the brand name and the build quality. Yea..you got a great bike my friend. My Cannondale is sweet, but a sweet ride costs a sweet penny. I started biking after I got my knee surgery and told myself that if I could survive a ride on the Katey Trail, then I'd buy myself a new bike. I ended up riding a mile, a week after surgery. Then I bumped it up and up and up, until eventually I rode for 30 miles. My reward to me, how sweet lol.

Thanks bro! I didn't Trek bought out Gary Fisher... I figured I would start out with what I got and if I turn out to enjoy it and really use the bike, my reward would be a better bike too. Right now I am just aching to get out and ride. My kids shared their cold with me this past weekend and this weekend I have a baptism... but I hope to sqeek in a few miles this weekend.

Damn... knee surgery that's tough!

This thread is really giving me the itch to go riding again. My job just moved this week so it's a little further away now. The bike route goes from 8 to 13 miles and there's a BIG ASS hill on the way home. It's ultra intimidating. We just bought our little boy his first upright bicycle. It's a little Specialized. He's pretty excited. Unfortunately it has rained since we brought it home.

Cool! We just bought my 7 year old his first real two wheel bike. It is a Redline BMX style bike... we got it used at a bike swap a few weeks ago. We still need to get him riding a two wheeler... but this is giving us lots of incintive to get him out there. Still have to get him over the fear of riding... that is the hard part.

Hey Lessen, I only have about 5 miles to ride to work... but there is a huge hill both ways... and your right.. it is intimidating!

I rode to work a couple years ago when I first got my ride and if I remember correctly I got it down to either 27 or 24 minutes... not sure which. I think I averaged like 14mph orf something like that. If I try to ride to work this summer I'm gonna have to do a fair bit of riding before I attempt it because although there are a number of relatively decent sized hills on the route as I had taken it before, the one that is added do to the extra distance to the new plant is like 3 times bigger than the largest one I've already rode... and that one ain't exactly easy either. I know that hill is out of my league until I get into better shape so I'm not even going to attempt to ride to work for a couple months.

I would love to ride to work. Like Lessen... I am not in as good of shape as I used to be....

The other reason is that I woud be so sweaty by time I got there I would need a shower!

Fortunately, I work in an industrial setting and although I would prefer not to be too ripe when I get there I don't mind getting a little sweaty. The problem right now is that I'm still working 2nd shift so on the days that I can ride to work it's at 2 in the afternoon. When I was riding a couple years ago I was going to work at 5 in the morning. Big difference from a perspiration aspect.

LMAO! I freakin' love Jeff Dunham :thumbup:

on another note.. I found a different route to work tonight on the way home. It'll keep me away from that bigass hill and it doesn't add any distance whatsoever.

Sweet! Jeff Dunham is awesome.

That's cool Lessen... hills are so much bigger when you have to ride up them on your own power!

I don't have a suit and tie job. I am just a lowly PC Tech for my local county government... but not to do the whole TMI thing... I sweat a whole lot... so I would probably be pretty ripe if I rode to work during the summer anyway. Also picking up the two kids at Daycare in the evening would pose a problem.

I need a new bottom bracket bearing for my BMX. Danscomp sells them, but they want $15 for an American BB sized bearing, because it comes with the aluminum bearing cup. A mid sized bearing is only six dollars, but they don't have them to fit my spindle. That cup is the only difference between mid and American bearings. I don't need the cup.

Although my daughter would love the bike ride. That kid even at only 14 months lives to be outside! She especially loves to swing or go for rides in the wagon. I think she would be ok with riding on the back of the bike... get her a cute little pink helmet! LOL
