I was invited to play at a work related golf event last week. I had not tried to play golf in over 10 years, and when I tried it 10 years ago I had a miserable time. I decided to give it a shot again and went to the driving range a couple times before the event. Picked up a used set of irons from a buddy of mine and bought a cheap golf bag. The day of the event I was pretty nervous but remembered the pointers that my buddy gave me about keeping my head down and using my hips. I ended up hitting pretty well for a newb. I lost 3 golf balls during the day, but most of the time I kept the ball on the green and was hitting it pretty straight. Now I'm hooked, but thankfully my budget will keep me from spending too much money on clubs and green fees.

Anyone else play golf?

I live just off the golf course and occasionally find a gold ball in my yard and the only thing that comes to my mind being that close to the green is.......oh man I bet my Savage could tear the poop out of that grass....and hey nice sand trap...lol

I love to play when time alows. It is tougt though, since a round of golf usually takes the better part of a day to complete. I think the last time I played golf, was the day I got married. Played ok. I really do enjoy it, but I do understand why you need to be single or retired to play on any regular basis. They are the only ones that have the time! LOL cuz if you have a wife and kids... free time does not exist. LOL Sounds like you had a great time. I wish my office would put on a golf tourney.

Does putt putt count? That damn windmill always messes me up! :D

I tried it once, swore I would NEVER play golf again, and to this day have lived up to my promise to myself, lol.

Putt putt does count...next time take a 3 wood with you and take full swings. LOL

I hear ya on the time crunch Tom. There is a lit driving range about 5 min from my house that is open until 9PM. That gives me a chance to hit for 15-20 minutes after the kids are asleep. The nice thing about going out with the work group is that we get to play during work hours. We leave around noon (while the rest of the office is slaving away), have lunch and play a round. They plan on getting together at least once a quarter, and I imagine I'm going to do it on my own probably once every other month.

I've been a avid golfer since I was in my teens. Unfortunately I blew my back out 2 summers ago and haven't picked up a club since. Sucks, too, because I had just bought a new set of irons to hack with. If I could, I'd play at least once a week. At this point, my back is feeling better so hopefully I'll be able to get back on the course in the Spring.

I used to play twice a week. But I no longer have the time..Plus my place of work once had a weekly league but everyone lost interest so they stopped it.I was so into it I built my own Ti driver..

I'm finding out that golf can be a little more pricey than I initially thought. One of my co-workers recommended a local pro shop to get a club fitting and free swing analysis. So I dropped in at lunch and long story short...the pro shop salesman recommended a custom $600 driver for me. **** that! For someone who has swung a club for less than a week I am not about to drop 6 bills on a new driver.

It's all sales BS. No need to spend that much. Granted, I have a Calloway ERC2 driver, but I got it as a gift. But I'd never spend that much. When I bought my irons, I went the clone route. I went to www.pinemeadowgolf.com and ordered up a set of Acer XP irons. They are like the Calloway X-14's, but only like $250 for the set. Unfortunately, I see that Pine Meadow doesn't have as much as they used to have. But it's still an inexpensive way to get fairly decent clubs. I know there are a lot of other clone outlets that you may want to check out.

Just thought I'd add that I just did a search and found www.diamondtour.com which seems to have a load of decent clones for cheap.

Thank you for the links Candyman. I see at diamondtour they have the TaylorMade R7 clone, which is the driver the salesman tried to sell me.

So with regards to clones, will they feel and hit very close to their counterparts? The pricing is incredibly low.

Truth is, a lot of clone heads are made in the same factories as the brand names. Although I haven't made a direct comparison between the ones I have and the true Calloways, for my feeble golf game they work wonderfully. I suspect that unless you're a very very very skilled golfer, you won't be able to tell much difference.

Good to know Candyman. I'm defintely in for a set of clones. Though I could feel a difference in comfort/feel between different brands of clubs, I also doubt I'll be able to feel the difference between a clone and a non-clone.

Have you guys tried one of the oversize titanium drivers lately? I tried out the Nike Sumo and it sounded like a damn gunshot when the ball left the tee. Loud and obnoxious could be a pretty good description also. lol

I owned a set of Callaway and Taylor Made irons and I loved the rifle shafts that Taylor Made uses.I still have Callaway 3 and 5 woods. From what I heard and read clones or knock off clubs are not as good as the real thing. That's why they are cheaper.

I went the used route myself. About 8 years ago or so I bought a set of barely used Taylor Made LCG's and I still play then to this day. I hit them well so I saw no need to upgrade. I have used Callaway woods as well. My driver is still the "Big Bertha" LOL Anyway I don't know if the clubs really do that much for you as they advertise. Just like RC racing... you can have the best rig on the market... but if you don't practice your just an expenisve speed bump. You can have the expensive clubs.... but that just means you will be farther into the woods looking for your ball.

Tom

The irons I have is a used Nickent set I picked up from one of my friends. He didn't have any woods or drivers so those are the specific clubs I'm shopping for.

It's a tough choice, since there are many different clones of the same club. In addition to the ones Candyman posted I found three other sites that offer clones of the TaylorMade R7 woods/driver. All of the sites offer new clones for less than the cost of used non-clones.

I hear ya on that Tom. I'm not looking for anythng too fancy, I just want something to hit with that feels comfortable so that I can focus on learning the game.

most pro shops will let you demo there irons and woods on the range, if you are unsure of what you want or are looking for. they will usually put tape over the name on the club so that you are not bias towards like a "nike" other then "adams".

You nailed that on the head

I have a father in law that wishes I did... He gave my wife and I both a set of clubs with really nice bags. Pretty nice ones to.

I somehow put 3 dents into the top of my 5 wood by hitting balls at the range with him... He thought it was funny. I was terrified I'd destroy the clubs. Some of the drivers are over $150-$200 a piece...

He buys what he likes in the pro-shop, then figures out what he doesn't like on the fareway. He ends up with a lot of nice drivers he doesn't care for. Odd little man.

I still suck and he still tries to get us out to swing at the range. Someday I won't suck at it. He had a mild heart attack this spring which meant he couldn't golf. So someday won't be until after next year.

Man you have a really great attitude. Most folks just go after the most expensive set out there. Practice is all that is needed to make you a better golfer. Have fun my friend... I would like to get out this year at least once and chase the little ball around.
