The aftershock has a few issues, but I preferred it over my 3.3 chassis revo with a 18TM and my savage. I sold both of those shortly after getting the AS.
The weaknesses:
2-speed
arms
chassis rails
pipe
turnbuckles
engine brace
Suggested upgrades:
LST2 two speed ($40 ebay)
LST2 shocks ($50-$60 ebay)
RPM arms with short lunsford turnbuckles in the upper arms. ($80-$90)
Lunsford turnbuckles for the other 4 main turnbuckles ($45)
Any other pipe. ($25 ebay)
Dynamite engine brace ($16)
For the pipe, a Losi HT LST pipe is pretty good. I run a
HPI Savage polished pipe and really like it.
This truck is much more fun to drive than the savage or revo. I had revo issues with big air. Always busted a shock, rocker, rocker post, bent the chassis, engine moves, chews up spurs, blow tranny gears...
With the savage, it just handles so poorly. Otherwise with all the recent things HPI has done to it (different bulk system to access diffs, receiver box, trans case, engine protector thing), it is a much better to work on and more capable truck out of the box than it used to be. Aside from the really crappy handling.
Still, in the end, out of all the trucks I've had over the past 8 years (which is probably about 15-20), the aftershock is my favorite.
I'm working on making a skid plate out of aluminum that ties the front/rear skids to the center. That will hopefully end my chassis rail issue... I've broken 3 sets right between the front/center skid. It's a pain to replace them.
