A question for you computer guys

Ok, so I was a victim of the pos that started the mydoom virus. Since my computer was getting up there in age I just decided to buy a new one. Anyway, I am not the most computer savy person to say the least, I want to get quite a bit of info off my old computer on to my new one, but I don't want to transfer the virus to the new computer. I can only get bits and pieces to save to either a disc or zip disc before my old computer crashes and I have to reboot so I know this is going to be a loooooong tedious process. My main concern is just not transfering the virus from my old computer to the new one, seeing as how I dont even know how I got it in the first place. I never open any email attachments I am not 100% sure of, I was running Norton system works 2003 and Zone Alarm, yet it still got me. Any help would be greatly appreciated, myself and my new pc thank you.

I was going to say run a good anti-virus as soon as you transfer all the files. One suggestion might be to UPDATE your antivirus definitions weekly, not annually.

I do update weekly, I still can't see how I got it, I am almost too cautious. I think Earthlink should step up their virus protection.

As I say my provider has had their database on address hacked, unless someone has made a spam program that sends e-mails out to every possible combination of letters and numbers of e-mail address'.

Have you tried just updating the virus software on the old box so you can seek and destroy the bug? Do you have a CD-RW drive in the old box? That would be the easiest way to move stuff over.

I have an external 60 GB USB 2.0 drive that I use as a transfer medium when the need arises.

You would certainly also want to run a microsoft update, get all the critical patches. You better hope your on cable or DSL though.

I'd install a good antivirus prog on your new system and get the latest defs. Then remove the old hard drive from the old system and hook it up to the new system where the cdrom goes.

when you boot the new system, don't explore the old disk or access it. Immediately bring up the anti-virus software and scan the old disk.

Once you've gotten it disinfected, copy the files you want to the new drive and shut down.

Put the old disk back in the old machine and hook up the new cd rom.

If the antivirus software is good, you shouldn't have any problems.

My new pc has Norton 2004, I updated it upon turning it on before even doing anything else.

EP, the mydoom virus does exactly that, generates addresses until it hits on good ones, then sends the virus with my email address attached to it as though I sent it, it also goes through my address book and sends it to all my contacts.

McVick, I did try updating the virus protection in the old pc, the virus wont allow live update to run, then almost imediately crashes the computer.

Error, I am affraid of installing the old drive in the new pc, this virus has wiped my poop out, and I would flip if I inadvertantly transfered it to the new pc.

Msly, yes I have DSL, I can't stand dial up. I would prefer cable but it is not available where I live yet.

What I really want now is 10 minutes, alone in a locked room with the sob that started this thing, him and me with my aluminum baseball bat, I would gladly introduce it to his knee caps, just for starters.

If it is W32.Mydoom.A@mm you can boot into safe mode (after turning system restore of if ME or XP) to boot into safe mode hold the F8 key for 2-3 second intervals before the boot screen and you should get a prompt asking how you want to boot, choose Safe Mode. This might take a couple tries as you might lock out the keboard by holding the F8 key too long. Once in safe mode run this tool that you dl from here http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxMydoom.exe

I have removed this virus off many computers so far without any problems. I have also tried the manual removal with 100% succsess so if you cannot get the tool contact me. Once we get this virus off the PC you can either put the old drive in as a slave, grab the data or just ghost it if that's what you want. Let me knw.

the only problem with this virus is the level of infection and distribution, I find it very easy to remove it completely. My Exchange server had over 250 instances of it.

I also think brining the old HD tothe new computer without cleaning is a bad idea, too much risk of infecting the new one. Keep it "quarntined" on the old machine and clean it there.

You need to fist DL the tool in regular mode if you are not running XP on the old machine. Too my knowledge XP is the only MS OS that has the option of SAfe Mode with Networking, which means you can get on the internet. So I would first boot up DL the tool, then shut down and come up in Safe Mode.

Just a thought if you have the computers networked or have the capability to do so does Norton allow you to to scan through my network places and scan the bad computer??? I would also possibly try loading AVG antivirus it's free and it has always seemed to work for me.

I did that once thru firewire on two viaos running XP. It worked. Had to share the target drive, but it worked.
