I picked up a 3s 6400 battery for my 4x4 stampede vxl. I got an Onyx 235 charger with it. The battery says to not discharge it above 70% my question is that wont the esc on the stampede shut it down at 50% power, or do I have to do something else? Do I need to run it a different way then a NiMh. Also should I charge the battery at 6400mah or do I use another charge rate?

thank you much!

Andrew

Turn the lvc (low voltage cut off) on. Refer to the stampedes manual to do that. I think but don't quote me on this, you just hold down the ESC button for a few seconds and the light turns green that means lvc is on. Never charge a lipo past the mah on the pack. I have a onyx 235 it says everything your asking in the manual as well. The stampede manual will answer a lot of your question as well. I'm not trying to be a jerk I'm just saying you should read them and if you don't have them you can always download them.

Thanks I read both of them and I see how to set the esc. I'm just confused at more of what charge rate I should use; it says on the battery: charge: 1c 6.4 amp and & max charge 2c 12.8 amp. So would I be safe if i set it for 6400mah ? Or do I need to charge it at a higher rate or lower rate then 6400mah (6.4amp)

thanks for the reply!

Andrew

Thanks, thats what I was wondering, I know you are not supposed to trickle charge a Lipo but did not know if a higher rate the 1c was better. Thanks for the help!

Andrew

the max to charge would be 12.8A the onyx 235 won't go nowhere near that figure. If your using an AC supply your limited to 5A or, 5.5A with DC charging 3s lipo.
You won't even hit 1C with this charger.

Charge em at 6.4A if you can....most cheap lipo chargers will only do 5A....You can charge up to 12.8A if you want/can do a fast charge. Slow charging them is best if you have the time but 2C isnt that bad.

thanks for the help, charger says it goes to 8amp. looks like 6.4 amp is going to be best

Andrew

the charger says it goes to 8A, but that's marketing trickery with words, they all use it. The more cells the less the amps it can use. When you try it and doesn't go to 6.4A it's not the charger being broke, It's the Watts of the charger being low.
It can happily do 8A with DC supply charging 2s, But not 3s and 4s would be 4.1A.
If your maxing out the charger it might not last that long.
No matter what figures the manufacturers say it will do, they leave the working out to the user and the important information is Watts.

thanks you were correct, it maxs out around 4.6 amps charging on ac wide open.

Andrew

Thats about 1hour 30min too charge. Thats not to bad with AC. Using a DC supply you might save another 10-15min. But, would it be worth it, considering the extra cost.
It's an ok charger to get used too how things work and also as a handy back up charger.
Hows the stampede running, I'm lost to choose from which to buy next. I have a maxx and def getting a helicopter next but also want either a stampede or mini e-revo or Vorza.

Its running well very fast very powerful, just having issues keeping rear axles in it and blew the stock tires off the rims. But really I'm very happy with it. Sure smokes my father in-laws slash! lol

Andrew

More cells=more fun
more cells = more breakages,
More cells=empty wallet.
The fun factor far out weighs the costs, until you've run out of things to sell that funds the habit.
