I am looking at talking my wife into buying me my first electric. I already have a T Maxx 3.3 only really want something to use when the kids are asleep. I've been looking at the rustler vxl, I'm really after opinions on the rusty or other options don't think I want a slash I know that doesn't really leave many options. Brushless would be good.

How about the XO-1? 100 mph! That should do it!

Sure it does, unless you refuse to own other makes.

If you're open to the idea of going with a different brand, I'll be happy to make some recommendations. If not, good luck.

It depends on what you want out of it. Do you want an off road basher or an on built for speed? The Rusty is a good rig and can be tailored to most environments. In the end though, a 4x4 MT will out perform it in rough stuff and an on road specific car will out handle it on pavement.

Off road for light bashing, crushing around the back/front yard or tearing up and down the cul du sac I live in. Brand doesn't bother me my LHS caries parts for HPI Traxxas Losi and Team Associated. Looking online YouTube etc I'm thinking about the HPI eFirestorm

If you're wanting a 2wd ST, like the Firestorm or Rustler, I'd go Rusty. It'll have more options when it comes to upgrades and I know that they can take some abuse with just a few upgrades.

This. The Rusty is a pretty good basher and parts are very easy to find.

A stadium truck is really not the best choice for bashing. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my STs, have 8 of them (all Associated, seven of them nitro). But trying to bash off-road with 2WD (whether buggy, ST or SCT) is kinda aggravating in most places. They are constantly spinning out on loose surfaces, getting stuck in ditches or on sticks, etc.

Honestly, a 4WD SCT is probably what you should be looking at. That, or a monster truck of some variety. You can get a brushless RTR 4WD SCT for under $400 from Associated, Traxxas, OFNA and others. You can also buy a kit and build it with decent electronics for similar money (such as a Durango DESC410 for $250, ~$100 for a motor/ESC combo, $50 will get you a number of take-off Radio/receiver combos).

I have an Associated Prolite, and I like it, but I also spent a lot of money making it the truck it is today. Gone are all the stock RTR electronics, stock shocks, stock hub carriers, the list goes on.

Why don't you want a Slash? Both of the Slashes are known for being great bashers. If you're already familiar with the T-Maxx, why not get an E-Maxx? You'll already know what upgrades are needed and work the best, plus you'll be able to stock up on spare parts easier.

An E-Maxx would be a great addition to your T-Maxx. As Schrode said, there are a lot of common parts between the trucks. It would also be easy to set it up to your driving style and location.

I'm also a big fan of the 1/16 eRevo VXL. It's stupid fast on 3s batteries it handles better than most other M/T on the market and upgrades are cheap. The only down side is that it can't handle as deep grass as its bigger brothers.

Plus 1 here. My first truck was a Tmaxx 2.5 and I ended up with an emaxx a year later. I got something that I could run easier and quieter in my apartment complex and I already had a ton of parts for it that were common to both trucks. The aftermarket is awesome on both trucks as we'll.
