well here it goes, i was thinking about selling my savage because i don't use it anymore and it frustrates me so much. i figure it would be better off to have its minor problem(or at least i hope minor) fixed. i've seen so many threads asking this question, but i can't find one that has the exact problems mine has. well, last time i was running it, and just finishing break in of the os 30, it started to need a lot more power to get it up the slight hill thats my driveway. then, it just stopped moving all together. the engine runs great, bogging down slightly when you give it power trying to move the truck though, but not much power is getting to the wheels. the wheels will turn maybe half an inch, but it wont go anywhere. you can easily push the truck with no problem forward, but if you try to push it backwards, all 4 wheels lock up on ya. i dont really wanna just start taking stuff apart not knowing what could possibly be causing this, so I'm asking you guys for some help. i most likely just skipped right over a thread talking about this exact problem, but a little help would be GREATLY appreciated.

thanks,
Braden

Have you verified the tranny aasembly? The two speed shaft or 3 speed if you have that. Have you checked the slipper on the tranny? have you verifed the Clutch on the motor?

The locking up you mention, have you checked the diffs?

One quick thing to check; look at the slipper clutch (the nut on the spur). The spring should be compressed. Try tightening it and then backing it off 1/8th turn. If that is the problem, search for "slipper coming loose - the fix". That thread details a cheap and simple fix that will keep it from happening again.

its not spinning..ill take a look at it tomorrow. its been almost 2 months since i touched the thing

Give it throttle while holding it off the ground. If the wheels will spin up according to how much throttle you give, then I would check the clutch shoes first.
Start at the very beginning, and we'll figure out the next step once you know the clutch and slipper are okay.

k, well from what i remember, the wheels wouldnt spin then, either. i'll just go try it all out tomorrow and get some more info. thanks for the help so far though

If they stop rather suddenly, I'd lean towards a broken gear tooth getting caught either in the trans or in a diff in the drive train.

well, i can try it..but not now

ill try to look at it this weekend, been super busy

well if it locks up when it is pushed backwards i would say that possibly, one of you diffs or even both diffs need to be rebuilt, always keep this in mind before you get a new engine, is this engine too powerful for my stock truck?
personally my very first thought on this would be that one of youe cvd's or cv's are shot, or your diff is in need of a rebuild, but it still could be simpler.
maybe your tranny stripped out, or even simpler the slipper clutch is not tightened.
or your hex adapters may have stripped your rim or vise versa, you rim has stripped your hex.

check your driveline because the problem is somewhere in there.

hope i could help, if your cvd's are shot, go look for mip cvd's all the way around the truck, even from tranny to diff, also would consider a steel spur gear and possibly bigger hexes like maybe a 20 or 23mm, this will most likely cause this problem to be fixed or even prevention of future problems from occuring! also if needed in the driveline, if robinson racing products makes diff rings and pinions, and or steel gear internals for the tranny i would seriously consider buying them!!!!

well, i dont think it ever had to do with too much power, i was just tuning it up still from breaking in

getting that rs4 to run made me want my savage back, so here it goes. is there a way to get the tranny out without taking the entire truck apart?

HeartBreak has you covered on this one, great info!
Hope you get it running soon!

If it's the 25, no. You have to take the truck half-apart. Schedule about 2 hours and 4 beers for this. The X is pretty much the same procedure, if the bottom gear in the trans is chunked. However, you have a quick-access feature of the trans case; remove the handle and two screws on top of the case, and lift the top off.

You'll need a fairly decent work space for this. Remove in this order, remembering where each screw goes (helps to lay them out in a pattern);

Fuel tank
Exhaust pipe and header
pipe-side wheels
the top end of the inner (front-rear and rear-front) pipe-side shocks
Rollbar/handle (rear body mount if using the X plastic engine guard)
brake linkage (just twist the plastic joint until it can come off of the Z-bend)
reverse module linkage (if equipped)
pipe side TVP
the two screws that hold the trans case to the motor plate

At this point, you should have a truck that pretty much looks like someone took a hunk out of the pipe-side. Gently, repeat GENTLY flex the truck "open" (just a hair!!) and wedge the trans out of the truck. The center two bones will fall out.

At this point, you should have the trans in your hand. If you do, I would HIGHLY recommend upgrading the center case to the X case; it's a direct replacement, and makes your life easier.

Also, if you have any intentions of ever installing either the reverse module or 3 speed, now is the time to do it. If you do either the reverse module or the 3 speed, the X center trans case is a must. It is a direct fit for ALL savages, and makes 3 speed adjustment and spur changes a breeze.

Complete repairs as needed, and reverse procedure to assemble.

It sounds like a lot of work, but when you do it once, you'll learn how to get a rhythm down, and it'll take far less time next time.

wow..sounds fun..great. can i just buy the plastic case for the tranny and put all the gears in it?

Yup. All you need is the case. It comes with everything you'd need. However, as I said earlier, to install the 3 speed and/or the reverse module, you'd have to yank the entire trans.

I need to pull my transmission. I just got the "higher third gear to put in and I need to put in my new MIP center CVDs.......nice weekend project. Have to have it for next weekend; have a meet with my RC group, P.O.R.N. or "Pacific Off Road Nitro" as some like to call it.
