My Flywheel is free spinning and I am trying to remove the clutch nut to remove the flywheel, is there a special trick?

If the flywheel is spinning, its gonna be a royal pain in the ass to remover if its on tight! I think one of the ony ways is a piston locker...

Here's a quick and easy trick to remove it. Take out your glow plug, turn the flywheel counter clockwise (the way the nut needs to turn to come off) bring the piston half way up and fill the cylinder with oil or fuel. Replace the glow plug and wrench the nut off.
What this does is hydro lock it.

What this does is hydro lock it.

This is actually safer than using a piston locker as it disperses the pressure evenly over the entire face of the piston. I've had to do it a few times.

GREAT STUFF!!!!

Hydro lock being your friend....who would have thunk it???

Keep it up guys

i HAD THE SAME PROBLEM TODAY and the hydro lock did'nt work i took apart the bottom end of the engine and jammed the piston where it wouldn't move??? every thing seems OK I havent run it yet but I still have compression!

Why don't you guys buy a freakin crankshaft locking tool and do this procedure the white way. I use one made by O.S. engines. You can buy one through Tower Hobbies or make one out of engineering plastic or Delrin. I agree hydrolocking the engine MIGHT work but man is it messy. Please DO NOT stick something in the glow plug hole to lock the piston. If you have Loc-tite (blue) on the crank to keep the clutch nut tight you may try to heat the clutch nut with a small soldering torch. Be extremely careful and only heat the clutch nut up right around the threadlocked area. The small amount of heat will HELP release the Loc-tite. My advice is to use your head and do things right the first time around.

I had the same problem when I replaced my flywheel. I took off my pull starter and took off the one way bearing and put it back on backwards then held it with a wrench and then I was able to get the nut off the flywheel :)

Hey Jesse G, The oneway bearing idea is not too bad. I still think you could easily damage a oneway if you put too much pressure on it. Those oneway bearings are kinda fragile sometimes. I think O.S. makes some pretty good oneways. Good Idea Jesse if it works, I have never tried it. I ALWAYS use a crankshaft locking tool.

The crankshaft locking tool is a piece of Delrin or engineering plastic that is about the size of your wife's pocketrocket. It is inserted into the back of the engine where the connecting rod connects to the crankshaft. The plastic dowel if you will, has a slot machined into it. This slot holds the con rod from spinning by taking up the slack in the crankcase. I hope that makes sense, it is kind of hard to explain. Most of these tools, like my O.S. model have two different slots on each end of the plastic dowel to accept different size engines. My tool is designed for .15 thru .21 if I remember correctly. Hope this helps you OLDS 97

Oh... that makes sense. I wasn't sure how you would lock the crank, but a slot in a dowel that fits in the backside would work pretty good. It would also minimize strain on the con-rod and wristpin.

BTW, it was your wifes pocket rocket as mine is happy with just me ;)
