XRT Steering Servo Replacement

My knowledge of servo brands is very dated so I'm going to need some education on who's today's players are in the servo market.

I have a Traxxas XRT and want an upgraded metal geared steering servo (as quick and torquey as we can get with stock wiring). I'd really like the servo to be a direct drop in replacement; not sure if that's a big deal given the scale of the XRT.

So, money's not an object, what servo should I be looking at for a direct drop in replacement on my XRT?

I would say either the 2085R or a 2085X there's also the Perfect Pass Monster T. Although i only had one stock Traxxas servo fail on me with my 2nd X-Maxx and i just replaced it with another stock one. here's the monster t if you're curious.

I run the 2085R servo in my Xmaxx and XRT. I had 1 stop working in my XRT and that’s because for some odd reason I turned my travel up to 150% from 100%. Not sure what I was trying to accomplish but it fried a 2085R servo. Luckily TRAXXAS warrantied it for me! I would HIGHLY recommend a GPM aluminum servo protective cover or M2C steering servo brace. I only say that because I snapped all the mounts off the 2085R from a hard chassis slap. Other than that no complaints!

Servo still works excellent. Just waiting on my GPM order to get it fixed!

Looks like the Perfect Pass has about 40% more torque than the 2085R. Is there a good reason to go with the 2085 over the Perfect Pass (or vice versa)?

I don't worry about spending on servos, you very much get what you pay for, so willing to put out for this upgrade.

The Perfect Pass is probably higher quality and the whole case is made of aluminum vs the 2085R which only has aluminum in the center and rest of it is plastic. Like how @AjDale mentioned the plastic tabs can break right off on a big hard chassis slap i've never had any issues with my 2085's although i only do small jumps in my front yard so it may differ depending on how you tend to bash. Get whatever fits you the best.

That's why I was asking. When I used to be in RC the main manufacturers typically rebranded servos from others and, as such, didn't have "the best". HiTec used to be great, I just showed my son my old 645MG in my HPI NMT that's still kicking after 25 years!

I'm going to start looking at the Perfect Pass, but appreciate the other recommendations.

Just gave my son his XRT this past Sunday at his birthday party. He immediately took it out into the 2 acre yard and started making passes. After a dozen or so high speed passes he said, "dad where can I go to jump it?". I said, "son there's a big mulch pile at the end of the driveway that we haven't spread yet, why don't you go try that?". Then I went and got my XRT and joined him for the next 2 hours.

He got his DJI drone out at some point and videoed some of our jumps and bashing so we do have some of this on tape that I can share with the group, so hopefully when he's home from school today I'll be able to get some of that posted. He's very much hooked on this hobby and the choice of the XRT was a good one! These things make excellent bashers, are very durable, and are very quick! They do tend to overheat but that's a byproduct of driving style which we'll need to remedy with upgraded cooling equipment (oh well, it's a reasonable thing to need to upgrade).

I did end up ordering 2 PP Monster T servos which will arrive tomorrow. My son and I will have a work day this weekend to install those as well as new captive suspension pins which he got from my brother as a birthday present and aluminum bellcrank steering parts and servo horns. I gave him a tool box and parts bin as well as RC tools so he now has an RC Spares box. Whenever he goes bashing now he knows to take his "box" with him and anytime something breaks we'll just say, "go get the box" and he'll know what is meant. "The box" will be well organized with spare parts and all the needed tools to wrench of the cars in the field and in the shop.

It's really fun being back in the hobby. It's even more fun having a son who is interested in the hobby and seeing the glimmer in his eye just like I used to have!

One last comment. When I got my truck out to run with him he looked at my controller and said, "Hey dad, why don't I get one of those!?!" I just laughed as I held onto my FlySky NB4+ Transmitter.... maybe one day son... maybe one day...

So apparently my boy took my truck out last night with his friend to the mulch pile for a little late night bashing. This morning I see they didn't have time to clean my truck off...

The hemlock mulch is beautiful and does smell good but I prefer it in the flower beds and chicken runs.

Also you can run the perfect pass servo at 8.4v whereas the traxxas 2085 r/x servos only like 6v bec

Wrong. You can run the 2085r at 7.4v with no issues. Have had mine for well over a year now at 7.4v and it’s a beast.

OK, you can run them at higher bec, but Traxxas don’t recommend anything over 6v
