Looking for suggestions for some aftermarket cooling solutions to the XRT. It seems my after switching my sons truck over to the optional high speed gearing, his tendency to have a bit of a lead foot leads to slight overheating.

Actually that tendency lead him to melt the solder off one of the main connectors going to the ESC, so dad's got to fix that today... and give him a little lesson of taking a break once in a while rather than going full bore for 15 minutes straight.

14 year olds being what they are though, it seems like we're going to need some better cooling on this rig, so what have you guys installed?

Add more powerful fans, and/or do what Traxxas did with the Mini XRT is basically cut out the whole windshield and some holes in the body for airflow.

Gearing down can also be possible. As the high speed gearing is ideally only for running on smooth surfaces for a bit more speed

Also if you're still on the stock power system, VXLs are known to overheat so it's not surprising to any of us lol.

Yea TRX plugs they like to unsolder them selfs after time. Had it happen on a XL5 brushed esc. Wasn't even hot it just detached from the plug. I think it's more of a design problem rather than heat or load but. 🤷

Found a site called www.hyperflowfans.com that makes some really nice setups for the XRT. Dillon runs things over there and I talked to him for a good 45 minutes this morning about RC, 3D printing, engineering, and life in general. Long story short I have 2 new cooling units on the way with "split leads" because that'll balance the power draw between my battery packs while the esc draws from the Rx box keeping a balanced system.

What Dillons sending me is probably overkill, but I like the idea of overkill and being overengineered for the task at hand!

Looks like my son and I have a growing to do list of upgrades to install:

- Captive suspension pins
- Aluminum bellcrank steering
- Perfect Pass Monster T Servo + Adapter Plate / Servo Horn
- Hyperflow Fan Upgrade
- Resolder the "white wire" from motor to ESC

All of these except the soldering are times 2 since we have 2 trucks. Good thing we have a barn and dedicated workbenches to escape to!

The perfect pass monster T servo is a direct drop in. No adapter plate necessary. I just purchased one myself! I have been running TRAXXAS 2085R servos figured I’d try something new.

My current fan setup is just a $50 dual NHX fan from Amazon. Works surprisingly well! I’m currently running max5 1100kv 24/35 gearing and it’s insane!

You sure about that? It is significantly smaller than the stock servo. I'll have to take another look at it when I'm home tonight, it was rather late last night so I was short on patience when dealing with it.

I also have to add one more item to my growing to do list. Seems Amazon is now sending a pair of Max6 ESCs our way? Don't know why, they just are... sometimes happy mistakes happen 😉

Yep. The monster T is a direct drop in. Maybe you got the monster? Not the T version. View attachment 234827
Max6 is very nice, I am running that in one of my Xmaxx’s. Max5 is a bit more capable but a little heavier.
Now Aj, I told you to make sure I ordered the T version. You were to double check my cart specifically to make sure that happened.

Where'd we drop the ball here? Mmk, I made a boo boo. Luckily Amazon has a generous return policy for Prime members 😀

I know it's not the original topic of this thread but what additional capabilities does the Max5 bring to the table and is really worth it considering Id have to buy 2?

I see most just going to the 6 and enjoying the results.

Max6 is sufficient but depending what motor you’re running I’d recommend a max5. The max5 will run much cooler, potentially smoother (have heard the max6 cogs, on occasion). Also, if you ever plan on upgrading the motors the max5 gives you more options

Mmk, I doubt we'd ever upgrade much beyond the power of the stock motor of the XRT (at least I wont). Gearing can take this thing to pretty incredible speeds or powerbands.

If my son decides he needs more, he's on his own with that 😀 For now I'm going to stick with the 6s and I think we'll be in good hands for a while.

AJ - we fixed you're little screwup and the Monster Ts are o. The way now 😉

You’ll be stylin with the max6G2! I’m running it in my Xmaxx with a 1250KV G2 motor. It rips pretty hard.

You’ll absolutely see a difference and will be pleased. Once you commit to the 8s you won’t go back to 6s😆

Well shoot! My apologies, not only did I order the wrong servos I forgot to add a 3rd for myself! I’ll have to get your info again and place an order for number 3😉

Mmk, the Max6 came today so I currently have my truck sitting here with the servo, ESC, and motor fans ripped out. About to rip out the bellcrank steering too.

That's a pretty decent portion on the truck gone, especially considering this things only a couple weeks old!

New servo comes Wednesday, new bellcranks are sitting here looking all pretty in their anodized orange, mounting plate for the Max6 arrive tomorrow, and the new cooling for the motor should be here by Friday. With any luck we'll be up and running for the holiday weekend!!!

Oh and I won an auction for an old 1950s Coke chest refrigerator! Gotta go pick it up in Philly but its so freaking awesome I'm thrilled!!! I know, not RC, but as I sit in my backyard bashing I can enjoy a nice cold one!

Max6 mounting and the Monster T servos came in today so I've got my sone prepped to have a work day in the barn tomorrow, wrenching on trucks. Sunday we're over on my grams 180 acre farm, out in the woods where we can jump our trucks into the side of trees and break them on all kinds of wierd stuff 😀

Gonna be fun times!

Enjoy! Sounds like a blast, a waiting on dinner cooling fans for my XRT and xmaxx at the moment
