Yes, they come in handy when tuning a nitro. They even help when re-gearing your electric motors.

Absolutely! You always want to be monitoring your engine temps somehow or another and an infrared thermometer is certainly a way to go.
The Kintrex IRT0401 thermometer would be a good one to get as well. Small, compact, and easy to carry in the pocket, or tool box. $20 is hard to beat too.
