Another noob question : with it being the dead of winter here and snow on the ground with sub-freezing tempts daily , we haven’t been RCing lately (fights back tears 😢). So will our tires get ā€œdead spotsā€ on them from sitting stationary for so long?

Yea. Me personally I dont have any experience with that. I just recently put all my cars on stands since I haven't ran them for a while.

If its like a super soft tire and insert like a crawler tire it will be more noticeable. My stuff is hard compound and firm insert setups for high grip tracks and I really don't notice dead spots in the tires when I have them sitting for more than like a couple weeks. Not sure if softer or harder tire/inserts come into play with having dead spots.

Just kind of like low psi vs high psi in a 1:1 car or truck?

Absolutely, and most foams will not recover.

I always either leave the tire/whl combos off all together, and stacked flat on one another, or simply suspend the vehicles by the chassis. Or both..šŸ»
I bet he's got a whole Keebler Elf pit crew that comes to rotate all those tires every night! (maybe fixes his shoes too) There's not enough time!!! 🤣

I am guilty of ā€œdisplayingā€ the top truggy combo for each set, but all of my wheels are dished, and the convex tire rests comfortably within the concave dish of the wheel below it, and under no weight to speak of.

Excuse the current mess of course..šŸ˜…

Gotcha. I’ll find a block or something to rest the chassis on so that the wheels and tires hang. I was most concerned about the Masher tires. They seem like they’d get flat spots. Or maybe I’ll just remove them and stack them until it warms up here.

Next Saturday is March and with it (sometimes) comes a few stray nice days. Nice enough to drive RC’s outside around here. And I can’t wait!

What has everyone been up to over the winter? Anything new and exciting with your RC rigs?

Why do you say $800? Are you new to the hobby or looking for your first car? Open fields and parking lots are ok for learning but if this is your first rodeo, I would suggest just going with something simple and small. Learn the basics of controlling a decent car and go from there, don't just think about the budget from which you have to work with.

I think we just want to see you enjoy this hobby and for that, it takes knowing what you want to do. It doesn't take tons of money to enjoy the sh!t out of this hobby nowadays. I remember when you needed $800 to get much of anything real fun together an ripping... Nowaday.. somthin else. 12 years ago, I raced 4wd mod, 1/12 mod, short course open and slash. Now I live in Panama and I just picked up an Arrma Typhon grom brushed for $140 and I have an absolute blast with it building little tracks in my small back yard and timing them. Check out my consistency challenge post and join in on the fun!

I started this thread back in the fall. I just like to keep it alive about all things RC (if I can). I went well above $800. My kids and I now have 5 RC’s. I invite you to go back and read some of this thread if you’re ever bored and looking to kill time. My RC is an Associated MT10 heavily upgraded. And I loooooove it.

I have been getting back on my Optima Mid build.
I need to take a few pics to post.
Its going ok. I am seeing quickly how poorly my builds 30 years ago compare with my building ability today.
The Koswork hop up parts are really good fitting, awesome quality! 😁
This car should be a huge improvement! šŸ‘
I bought a couple old Kyosho nitros to restore.
I finally shipped stuff to Team Blue Groove.

I think thats it for now.šŸ¤”
How about you? Whatcha been up to??? šŸ˜Ž

I’d love to check out some pics of your Optima Mid. I’ve been itching to drive my truck but Mother Nature is a fickle bitch so that won’t be happening for a while. The kids have been lost in PS5 world which works out well since it keeps them busy and quiet on cold windy days. Lacrosse for them starts with some clinics next week which is good and a sign of spring to come soon. Then soccer starts so we’ll be pretty busy around here soon enough.

Yeah, our kids wanted to stay inside and play games too. The winter time blues! šŸ„¶ā˜¹ļø
Sports will be a nice change and look forward towards spring!😁
I hear you about the weather! The snow and now wind has just been hammering us here! I need to get my Granite going for some snow runs!
Honestly, running just about anything other than the snow blowers would be fantastic!!! šŸ™„šŸ¤£
I will post up some pics of the Mid soon.
I have taken the front end apart 4 or 5 times tonight chasing slop out of 30 year old parts.
I've been shimming everything! Trying to get everything up to snuff has been a challenge! 🤣
Its been a lot of fun figuring out how to improve and upgrade this thing. Now that I've got the project moving again, I want to finish it! (And run it!)
I feel like the success in the build has been a big motivator! šŸ˜Ž
I would be so happy at a track right now!!!

Nice. When you guys say ā€œslopā€ , do you mean that parts of the car are loose?

The 'play' that comes from poorly fitted bearings into aluminum pieces or loose steering parts.
The 'slop' in my case was from bearing not fitting correctly that allowed my axle shafts to wobble in the carriers.
It doesn't need to be ultra tight. Some give is good I think but this was a mess.
All 8 control arm hinge pins got replaced so now they are all shimmed too. The control arms only move up and down now, not forwards and back! šŸ‘šŸ¤£
My steering was binding up because the hardware was wrong and the linkage couldn't flex to match the servo's rotation... all fixed and tight too.
I am working out how to replace the shock mounts and get those right too. Someone threw a wrong sized spacer in there so the shock can bang around up top.
I call all that 'slop' šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤£
