Why does my motor shut off when I hit the brake on my MT2?

So, after much deliberating I decided to get the HPI MT2 instead of the Savage. Didn't want to spend too much on my first foray into Nitro RC. So far, it seems cool and I think I'll really like it once I have it tuned.

Anyway , As the subject line says, I have a question regarding the brake and throttle settings. I am in the process of breaking in the motor on my MT2 and am following the directions to the letter. At this stage I have done the static break-in and now I am running at 1/4 - 1/2 throttle ( Max ! ), very rich and have burned through 3 tanks of fuel. I plan on doing another 4 - 5 tanks before I even begin to lean it out. So far so good: Motor starts well and runs nice and cool. The only question I have is this:

When I push the trigger forward to activate the brake, the throttle closes completely and the motor shuts off. I'm sure this is a matter of a simple adjustment, but I am looking for a place to start. I have set the brake so that there is no drag when it is not on and the truck slows nicely when I use the brake, so I think it is where it needs to be. It just seems that my throttle is closing too much when I use the brake.

Please advise when you get a chance.

Thanks so much for your help - You guys know everything!

George!

You need to adjust your idle stop screw. It's on the side of the carb and it keeps the carb from closing all the way. Adjust it til you get a good idle.

before you do anything set the opening PRIOR to running. Adjust the Idles set screw so you have a 1mm opening and then test the brakes. THe opening should never close completely. You should never tune with the transmitter. put your throttle trim to neutrak and then do what I mentioned. Try that and let us know what happened

Thanks guys. I'll try that tomorrow and get back to you. I figured it was something simple like that. Thanks again!

After three tanks you can lean it out the top end 3 1/2 turns from starting point so if your orignal settings were 4 to 5 turns out do 1/2 turns after all the other settings that were suggested

Thanks all. I adjusted the idle stop screw and solved the problem. Ran another 3 super rich tanks through it today and started to lean it out a bit on the 4th tank. NOW she is starting to come to life. Gotta say this truck seems pretty ballsy. I am diggin' this Nitro thing. My only experience in R/C has been with boats ( I have a 12 cell fast electric from BBY Racing - fast but short lived with those batt packs. ), so I like the fact that Nitro runs much longer and you're only a fill up away from getting back at it as opposed to an hour + of charging time. Also have an R/C sailboat, but that's a completely different groove than a Nitro truck.

Can't wait to bash with my friends RC10GT.

Thanks again! I'm sure I'll be back with another noob question in the near future.

George Costanza (Can't-stand-ya) LOL!

One more thing:

GO SOX!!!

You should be able to out manuver your friend since you have 4wd. Just take your time breaking it in and learning how to drive. You can always kick his ass in a couple months!

Thanks for the advice Olds. I hear ya about the learning to drive thing. It def. takes some practice, but it's fun to learn. I WILL be kicking his ass in a month or so, haha!

Thanks again!

George
