I bought an O.S. 18 engine that came with a #8 glow plug.

It says in the manual that came with the engine that an A-5 or R-5 could be substituted.

Could you folks tell me the reason for different plugs.I assume it's temp, humidity and stuff like that. But which one is for which?

I want to have plugs on hand but would like to understand what's what 1st.

PS: I'm almost ready to fire this bad boy up. My son is all excited. I hope I didn't screw it up by taking it apart. A definite learning experience.

I just talked to the LHS that sold me the O.S. Engine and they said they run the #3 plug all year.

Here in Louisiana with the weather we have most of us run the same plug all year around, but ou weather is unlike anything else anywhere

# 8 Hot Recommended for most current O.S. (and other) 2-stroke engines

A5 Cold Recommended for most current O.S. (and many other) 2-stroke engines particularly for 1/10th & 1/8th scale off-road car engines

R5 Very Cold Recommended for high-nitro fuel and high r.p.m. engines, particularly 1/8th track racing car engines

When you refer to "hot, cold, very cold" are you talking about air temp or how the plug burns??

Would you want a hotter plug for colder temps and colder plug for hotter temps?

Great link Nitrogator. That was everything I was looking for.....and then some.
Thanks

I like Mccoy 59 plugs for everything. My jato runs a 3.3 and mccoy have a Rustler 2.5R that runs the same plug and my BB pico .21 runs those. They make #9 thats a medium hot plug if I remember right and a #8 is a cold plug. These guys with 12x 6 trailers for carrying all there racing stuff and are hard core racers run nothing but McCoy plugs in all there R/.C cars/trucks.
