I was just thinking about how far RCs have come in the last 20 years that I have been involved. Ill have to say its been interesting to see its evolution. The most changes and advancements have been made in the last 5-6 years.

What do you see the evolution in RCs looking like in the next 20 years?

I would hope that we would see these types of advances in 20 years.

Radio systems that have smaller receivers with completely glitch free operation. DSM type technology will become the industry standard. On board monitoring of temp, rpm, etc will also become standard. Transmitters will have large full color displays similar to PDA cell phones.

Smaller, lighter, and less expensive battery packs with very high energy density that are completely safe to use and charge.

Nitro engines that tune themselves, by monitoring the air/fuel ratio through some type of electronic device. Sounds far fetched but I'm sure someone could do it. EFI for our little two strokes?

I was thinking of a 1/8 scale size of a 4 stroke motor in an 1/8 platform. Fuel that is cheaper to use and more power efficient. Or like SD said, an onboard fuel management system but be tied into the TX spektrum system.

For electrics, heck just better batteries that have a longer run time that will not overheat. Possibly a solar application for out door cars.

Man, 20 years.... Hopefully I will be able to enjoy RC in 20 years. What will not change would be the shorter list. I think you will see advances in all facets of RC. From new alloys, stronger lighter plastics, Smart Electronics, battery technology. The way the vehicles are designed I am sure will all change. I think the biggest advancment will bring the PC into RC. You will be able to hook your RC to your PC and completely tune and configure it. It is nice to think about what the future has in store. Hopefully we are all around to see it... and maybe even try it out! I am with you guys though.. I think Woodie already has an RC girlfriend in the basement! :gulp:

There already is a nitro engine with electronic fuel management, But it's for large scale airplanes. I did research on that once. I really would like to see EFI for nitro car's and truck's. One of these day's

Hmm 2027?

I would think by that time nitro burning vehicles would be completely outlawed as the cancer of California legislation spreads to the rest of the country . . . .

Advances in battery technology will come to a screeching halt as the growing liberal bleeding heart population elects the first transgender Independent into office and legislation is passed to ban all "unnecessary" raping of our planet's resources, the only electric power available to RC will be in the form of solar power, which as we know will be as worthess as the liberal transgender president we have elected to office . . . .

Mainstream combustion engines will be atomic water-burning engines with parts that don't wear out with all the power of a popcorn fart and as frustrating as a henpecking housewife . . . and of course these engines will be mass produce by robotic machines in China, non-rebuildable and completely devoid of nuts, bolts, and other "annoying" attachment objects, rendering them impossible to upgrade . . .

Secret splinter groups, identified only by a secret handshake and a cryptic tatoo will assemble in basements and bomb shelters across the country, exchanging black market "oldschool" nitro parts and holding secret midnight bash sessions in the middle of the desert under the light of burning torches, burning fuel distilled in converted whiskey stills . . . .

The AE, Losi, Traxxas, and HPI debate will finally come to an end as they will all now be owned by Microsoft . . . . hence you won't be able to even start the engine until you register your private key, and any cracked versions of "MSRC" will automatically generate a signal to the central offices in Washington which will activate an RC neutron bomb that will target your neighborhood, knocking out all electronic devices for a minimum of two hours until the Software Police arrive . . .

Related to this change, violent crime runs rampant as policing organizations are now also owned by Microsoft, and the emphasis is on storming houses at 3AM to confiscate pirated software, other crimes are addressed as "user-complicated issues" . . . .

Butt no matter what changes in RC, or how it actually advances, we can be certain of one thing . . . .

Some people still won't have a clue how to tune their engines! :D

:jittery:
LOL

I read all posts here and this has to be the funniest, but seriously i agree with the guy who wrote about on-board temp monitoring, automatic tuningetc and maybe RTR engines will come pre-run-in

I think eventually all rc's will run on regular gasoline..which will be $9 a gallon

Ah, but then AT&T buys Microsoft and nothing gets done because of billing problems!

The biggest change will be with the drivers (racers, that is). The racing scene will become extremely competitive. So much so that it will spawn a full time professional series that may last 7 or 8 months. Pro Drivers will make good coin in return for their skills on the racetrack. Top of the line "race cars" will actually begin to sacrifice durability in order to save weight and gain overall performance. The competition is so tough that if you did wreck you would finish dead last anyways. The cars will be faster and thus the tracks larger. Large video displays will be utilized in order to assist drivers in seeing the farthest sections of the racetracks. Larger tracks allow more cars to race at once. Fields may consist of 25 cars or more. Cable television (SpeedTV) coverage will be normal.

... and then I woke up. :)

Electronic stability controlled hovering platforms will become possible as gyroscopes and microcontrollers become more available. Like helicopters but easier to fly (boring :P). Also onboard VIDEO transmission will become huge in my opinion. With longer range equipment and higher reliability and safety, I predict a low cost toy that you can throw out your window and control from your PC with video and other types of feedback. You can fly it to your friend's house and buzz his window. Gas/nitro will always have its place, but high tech eletric will win in the end. Military applications of rc are going to explode with semi-sentient RC army robots leading the way to a fully automatic roboarmy........ then the roboarmy will turn on us and kill all humans. Enjoy RC while you can!

An R/C Space Shuttle with onboard video that we can perform lunar landings with...

NOS man...lots of NOS and superchargers!
Man.. We can only hope! Or how about driving your Rc's from inside on the computer?? Who needs fresh air.

I think them Rc robot things are gonna be pretty big once they can find a way to make them cheaper.. Them seem to be pretty cool.
