Wow. So many awesome rigs! I started with a Frog back in '86 and it was unfortunately stolen 30 years later from my storage. I replaced it with a 3605 Stampede. 11 years later, I returned to the hobby and have been going a little crazy since then. I've added a Redcat Tornado EPX, a Gen 7 Pro, a Losi Rock Rey and a tiny little Syma 5CSW I've yet to receive. I'm also considering adding the BLX 6S Senton to my 4x4 Mega Senton for balance. :)

I had the Syma S5XW not a bad little drone, but the slightest breeze is too much for it. Also I could not get the app to work on my Samsung Galaxy S5 Active but it worked on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0.

Out of all of these in the 1/10th scale and smaller, which had the most bang for the buck? (which are diamonds in the rough?)

Out of all of these in the 1/10th scale and smaller, which had the most bang for the buck? (which are diamonds in the rough?)

As you can see, excepted the Tamiya, they are all chinese brands. I received almost all of them from whebshop to do a review. You can see videos on almost all theses cars on my youtube channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBpWs8cay7kTcjilt7dzsHA. Forget the name of the webshop on the videos as you can buy them where you want. Some will say that reviews for products received for free are biased, it isn't false to say that, there are too many biased reviews on youtube, i did be fooled by few of them. Under each videos there is a link to my review on rcgrousp and i show all the bads things that happen to me with these cars, maybe more than many others reviewers. I'm not the kind of guy who say easily and quickly, awesome, very nice, or this kind of things in my reviews.

Anyway, so far i would say that my diamond car is the Tekno EB48.3 (i still haven't tested my Arrma Kraton). Compared to the Tekno no one of them reach its level of handling and durability. I bought my Tekno as second-hand, so not so very expensive. There is also a thread on my EB48.3. So, when we talk about diamond, imo we talk about something with a high level. My nightmare car was the H.King Rattler, sold as 3s capable buta 3s lipo destroy the drive train, it need many modifications to hold a 3s lipo. And also the Menmax Mammoth, HPI apache copy, with weak transmission and bad gearboxes mold.

So, in the 1/10 and smaller cars, there is no real diamonds, there are some of them who are nice for the price and will need more or less upgrades. The remo hobby 1/16 is nice, not very fast but solid, it doesn't need upgrade, not the peferct car but fun. The WLtoys 12428 is nice excepted the gears which are weak but there is a metal gears upgrade which is recently sold. The WLtoys 10428 which is a twin hammer copy, isn't bad excepted that the electronic can fail. The SST 1937 at the price it is sold offer good things, my main complain is the shock absorbers which can open easily and the front a-arms pins which can bend easily. The FS Racing Victory X, when the diff. housing is upgraded isn't bad. I like the JLB 21101, but i have the first release with bigger wheel axle than the further release which tend to break, but JLB has upgraded the wheel axle for really bigger one, we still wait to see them available. The P949 tractor is a good copy but discontinued, it is really a fun car to drive, the original tamiya will be same. None of these in 1/18 to 1/10 cars need to spend a fortune in upgrades if you keep them stock and don't ask too much to them. The HBX Iron hammer is the one which has the most poor handling. I can't list all the cars here, i advise to read my reviews on these cars.

I would say that none of them are really crap. They are almost all cheap and for the price they offer good things. I see them cars/trucks for low budget and for somebody who want to enter in the hobby to give it a try without burn is wallet. But we really can't compare them (from 1/16 to 1/10) to a tekno (the diamond) or even Arrma 1/8 (even Arrma need few uprgades to make it more durable) which are really good basher. Even the BSR Berserker isn't bad (a HSP uprgaded sea rover) but not at the level of Arrma, a little bit behind.

It aslo depend what you want to do when you buy a rc car. I see many users use the car mainly on flat surface and don't bash it in skate park or BMX track and are happy with that, so they say that the car is durable for them. Me , i would say that i have a rough use with my cars, so i manage to break almost all of them. A recent example with the ZD racing Thunder ZTX 1/10 stadium, quadcopter 101 did a video review on flat and loose surface without doing really big jumps, for him the car is nice and fun when with me, by doing more big jumps, i show that we can bend a dog bone, break the body shell, the slipper can become loose, drive cup grubs screw can become loose, the motor can lose is position and we can strip the spur gear, this car need to be verified before use it, so i don't say the same things than quadcopter 101.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply.

I asked this because my daughter wants an RC truck to run with me. I bought her a walmart new bright buggy that is 1/16 scale and is about the right size and speed for her (slow), but does not have proportional steering, and the steering only works half of the time. It's frustrating for her to the point that she starts to lose interest, so, I am looking for something a little more hobby grade that can take the abuse of fairly flat and loose ground and concrete but without big jumps.

I bought the Arrma Granite 4x4 for me but also for her to learn with however it was a bit too much for her even before the upgrades. So yes, I am looking to the Chinese market for something smaller than 1/10th scale that she can run stock or close to it and get many runs out of.

I will definitely check out your reviews. Thanks for the info.

A good entry level for beginner is the ECX amp 2WD. Not very fast out of the box, it will need upgrades to use it on brushless, like steel gears and new cvd, but it is strong enough for a brushed motor. The new 2WD Arrma series seem not bad for the price also.

For the same price with chinese brands you will have steel drive train but need to check the assembly. And brushless motor, maybe too fast if you want something slow. And 4WD isntead of 2WD.

The 1/18 to 1/16 have the default to be very small and not very good in grass. The small WLtoys A9x9 serie is already fast for what it is, the 9X9-B will be worst as it use a 540 brushed motor, so really faster, instead of a 380 in the A9x9.

The handling of the Feiyue FY03 and WLtoys 12428 (two cars which are very close) won't be the most easy for a beginner as they have high gravity center, they rollover easily. The WLtoys 12428 which has more power than the Feiyue will be better in grass. The Wltoys 12428 as the size of a 1/10 buggy.

Hey man I just now realized you are jjm73 from URC and RCGroups, I've watched and read a lot of your stuff on Youtube and RCGroups.

I know what you mean by the paid reviewers, they are all over the internet, the worst two I have found to be The RC Saylors and RC Tanks and Trucks, although some of the vehicles he actually does an honest review of. The Rc Saylors I had to stop watching because everything they get is so awesome and amazing.......

A lot of the 1/10 Chinese cars that jym has are rebrands of cars that we hear about all the time. Like the ZD Racing and FS Racing stuff, are just HSP rebrands like Redcat Racing, Exceed Rc, Himoto and Maverick Racing. All the same cars, for the most part just different colors for bodies and different electronics, the Maverick Racing vehicles do use a slightly different chassis and chassis brace however. But parts are everywhere for these cars and there are a lot of hop ups available for them.

For a beginner the HSP rebrands are not bad, for the most part the brushed models hold themselves together pretty well. The monster truck seems to be the one to avoid as the dog bones bottom out in the diff cups before the chassis hits the ground.

Nitro Rcx has the brushed Exceed Rc Sunfire Buggy on sale all the time for less than $100.

Yes it is me ;) . Too bad that URC is down since a long time.

About the Chinese brands i know :
VRX : which supply Quanum, FTX, Integy.
ZD Racing : the only car which look like same as the ZD racing 1/10 is the LRP blast.
FS racing : which supply (or did supply) Helion, MHD, Reely, Jamara, Duratrax.
HSP : supply Redcat, BSR, Exceed rc.
SST : which supply MHD in EU.
Vkar : which supply Helion, T2M, Amewi.
HBX : which supply FTX, T2M.
Himoto : which supply exceed rc, H.King.
Hobiba : which supply H.King.
WLtoys : which supply ripmax.

There are other chinese brands who aren't rebranded like DHK and JLB.

Besides my kraton I have a rustler vxl, a proline ambush, and a hpi q32, I used to have a 1/16 e revo vxl as my first hobby grade rc but I sold it a while ago.

Rustler with purple chassis and transmission.

theJang found Legos.

https://www.youtube.com/user/LEGOJANG

Plus his local RC track went OOB, and cops in Cali are apparently not RC friendly. Last straw, the forum crashed last fall due to a server upgrade that his forum software couldn't handle, and apparently he didn't care enough to fix it... :(

URC had a great mix of basher, racer, DIY'er, brand fanbois and mostly civil dialog...

RIP URC.

What happened to URC?

1.) Arrma Kraton
2.) Arrma Granite 4x4 (daughters)
3.) Losi Mini Rock Crawler Pro
4.) Latrax Teton (daughters)
5.) ECX Temper (daughters)

Basically some update to the forum software didn't like some scripts and it made the forum inoperable. I was talking to another guy about it on another forum and apparently it would take one person days to rewrite the scripts so they agree with the update for the software. The forum has been down since August 22nd 2017. The main page has said this since a few days after that.
"Forum is down for technical reasons*. The fix will unfortunately be difficult and will take some time. Apologies for the inconvenience." "An automated server-side upgrade rendered some crucial older scripts unusable."

URC is/was a one man show, and it was his side project. So I have a feeling it won't ever come back online.

"theJang found legos" hahahahahaha! That's funny...don't know why but I laughed pretty hard at that. Not that I have anything against him or legos at all...his videos helped me on a bunch of different things because he was always clear and concise and what can I say about legos? They're awesome!

Anyway, that all sucks. URC was around for a while and to go kaput like that is a real bummer. Kind of like the RC equivalent to the library of Alexandria.
