What do you do when your RC's get out dated?

Hey Guys,

I am not in this situation quite yet, but what do you guys do with all the RC's you have collected over the years? I have a Tmaxx which may be outdated technology, but still has alot of parts support... at least for now. I have 5 or 6 others but for now they are not outdated. Time marches on, and just like electronics, RC will evolve and change and the RC's that we had that were the "latest and greatest" are now yesterdays news. My point is... I have 6 or 7 RC's now. Not to mention spare parts and such for all of them. I want to continue to grow my collection as newer and more advance RC's hit the market. In order to do that I either have to find room or sell them. But once the latest and greatest comes out my old RC's and parts are worthless. So now that I have kept you reading my ramblings..... How do you guys handle this issue?

Find a kid near you (or with you) and let em give it a whirl...if you have any sentimental value to it make it a shelf queen....or sell them for HUGE losses like I have been doing these past few months.....oh yeah this is not the collectible market to plan your kids future on......suck it up and dump em.....
Savage .25 RTR less than a 1/4 gallon sold for 200
3 electric TC3 and enough parts to keep em going for over a year of hard use all went for 250 electronics too.....
OFNA 9.5 pro with all the upgrades 175 shipped....
I got nowhere near what I put into them and people will still try to lowball you over and over....don't put alot of financial stock into them unless you truly enjoy it.....at that point use em til you feel like you've enjoyed the investment to it's fullest, then whatever you get is just gravy for the new rig.....

If you aren't attached to them, sell them for whatever you can get and upgrade the ones you are keeping with the proceeds.

I call it recycling of hobby dollars.

For me their not worth selling. The resale just seems a total waste IMO. They are worth more to keep. I have a lot of money in my T-Maxx. From the original build to replacing parts when they break.

I think you may have seen my E-Maxx thread.. I just won a lightly used E-Maxx on Ebay. It's the previous generation with a crapload of extras... over $950 new/retail in all. I paid $350. There is no way in heck I could personally take a loss like that even if I wasn't a die-hard r/c'er. I'd find the extra 2 cubic feet of storage space just to justify not taking the loss even if I only ran it twice a year. But that's just me.

That was the issue I did have with my T-Maxx. I had so much money into it that I ended up converting it over to brushless using the GorillaMaxx conversion.

I parted out all the parts I did not need and ended up with enough $ to cover the conversion kit.

It was a great project that I will never part with.

I swore never to pump so much $ into a stock rig again unless converting it to something else. Of course then the 5B came along.................$$$$$$

See, now that's a good idea. I would rather pump MORE money into a car to make it something different than to sell it for a huge loss. Now you have something that worth keeping around.. plus it's more YOURS than before.

This would have to be different for each person. Personally I don't fall in love with them so I don't mind selling them. It sucks to take a BIG LOSS when selling them but I knew that before I started throwing money at it. Most of my rc's are sitting on a revolving door so I guess I just got used to it.

I hear ya guys. It is hard to take the loss and I think that is why I keep fighting the urge to sell. That and the fact that unfortunately I got attached to them, especially the Tmaxx which was my first Nitro.

So how often do you guys think about replacing your rigs? Do you get one a year, every two years? Longer?

I had way over $1000 dollars worth of Tmaxx, engines, wheels and tires, carbs, 3 custom painted bodies and endless parts, and sold it all for $250. That also included a JR computer radio along with the stock one. He even made me start it, and run it before he bought it.
Now, over 2 years later, I really regret it, and I won't ever do that again.
I think I'll do the same with my R/C trucks that I do with all my planes. Keep them out of the way, and hang them on a wall or the ceiling.

i have in the past sold my older rigs to someone looking to get in the hobby, sell them a rtr rig that they can learn on much cheeper then a new rig. i got a few people in the hobby that way. but most of the time i sell them for what i can get to fund parts or a new rig. i have never bought a new rig, nor have i dumped tons of money in any of my rigs so i can't speak for the big losses. if ther still in good shape pack them away, they will be collectors items in the future. or decorate with them

Rolex... man that is what I am afraid of. I haven't flown since 1993 but I still have everything I need to fly, except a plane. I don't know why I hold on to it. I know I can't keep growning my collection without finding ways to either get rid of, or store the rigs I have now. I don't club race as much as I used to any more. For several reasons, Once I got married, I didn't race as much and now that my daughter's been born I am fairly confident that I will race even less. So I don't know why I keep my 1/8 scale buggy and truggy. I have them cleaned and sitting on a shelf looking great and just waiting to feel dirt again. Maybe if I can get a track out back I will run them more. It just seems like a lot of money being wasted, or more acurately money already wasted because if I do sell them I will get almost nothing for them. The reason I say it is money wasted is purely based on the fact that I will not get the money back I put into them. My electrics I seem to use them much more. I am not sure why, but the nitros just don't get used as much.

i feel the same way. its never worth selling or getting rid of ANY rc.. its pretty popular to have some vintage rc as well..

My old Outlaw Ultima Truck has been canabalized for parts, and sits on the shelf "Stuffed and mounted." It's dogbone cups are badly worn, and everytime it leaves the ground, it breaks a gear. Gear diff and no clutch, joy....

I dont get rid of mine, with 30 odd I use some to part off for others, I have given away 3 to my future son in law, my stepson and a fellow r/c er to paint 4 bodies for me. I also find myself giving parts away to other people, I guess just 'cause I can. But I do have 2 shelf queens. An Brushless Emaxx that is ALL aluminium, and a GV Rampage. I dont like the truck but it is an AWESOME looker as a stock ride. The electrics I am always changing out motors to make them faster and, in some cases, seriously overpowering the chassis, and the older nitros are used to practice 'driving skills' before I try them on the high end stuff.
Bottom line give them away to someone more in need rather than sell them. You get more out of that.........

personally, with the exception of my savage (my first real hobby grade RC) i dont drop too much money into any RC. most of the upgrades i do are simple and usually required to make enjoying the truck much easier. given the above, i dont mind selling my RC's. and like robmob sid, i look at it like recycling my hobby dollars.

I recycle as well. If you know you are going to do it, think of it as a leaseed car. Just get rid of it before the market drops too much. Like if you have a MBX4, sell it before theMBX5R comes out!!!

Got a neighborhood kid that watches ya? Donate it to him (or her).
That would make a memory. Anything to help a kid. That would be the best thing if ya can.
You'll never get the money out of it you have invested.

Isn't that little thing with the wing the main thing ya need?


I've got 3 planes and I can't fly. Was '98?
Want to though. Hope to this year. Maybe.

I've already got plans for my Rustlers to go to people that want to get into the hobby, but I'm not going to get rid of them until my step-dad is ready to upgrade to a RC10T4. I think with me having a track at home, when people come over they have a lot of interest, and they're more comfortable asking me for help and getting into the hobby at my home track than they are going to a hobby shop or a track full of strangers to ask for help. I'm planning to pull off my expensive parts like lipos, brushless motors, etc... and giving them a nice rig that wont take a uge loss if they destroy it.
