Well, when my son got home from school today, we decided we would take advantage of the nice day and put the rubber to the road. One last check...everything looked good.
I pulled that thing until I almost got a blister.Nuttin.Natta. We sat back trying to figure what we did wrong when my son said...dad..we forgot the glow plug ignitor...DOH..One idiot mark for dad.
Igniter on, 2nd pull, we have ignition. It was idling a bit high but not bad.My son ran it a few figure 8s and said it seemed to be idling faster. He had to hold the brake on to hold it back.
Brought it back in and shut it down. Put piston at bottom.let it cool.Looked at exhaust and it was dripping.hmmmm
After cool, fired right back up.Same thing, idle got faster after a few slow laps.Brought it in still running.Dripping fuel from exhaust.I backed out idle screw until it was great. Ran it again (cooling 1st) same thing..got faster as it went.
All of a sudden, while holding the brake, the engine cranked WIDE OPEN.We both freaked. It banged into a small tree going slow,no controls on brake/gas or steering, engine screaming,my son yanked the fuel line off the carb and it died. That probably lasted 10 seconds. We thought we may have blown the motor.
Time for a beer now. Why would all control stop?? My son said "maybe the batteries died?" I said "why would the thing MAX OUT because of a dead battery?"I checked the linkage, everything looked fine. We changed the batteries and I'll be danged. All controls back.(scratch, scratch)???
Ok..Ready again for tank #3.I pulled, and pulled and pulled some more (with the igniter!)nothing.
I pulled the plug,OS #3),it looked like new.
Checked the HSN setting.2 turns out.
Looked at the LSN and it seemed in rather far. I remember some where reading it should be flush. I backed it out till flush. More pulling. Finally started, running high and dripping from exhaust. We did a few more laps and it was running so high, my son was riding the brake full just to keep it from going Mach.
In one last time.Let it cool.Fired it up.Backed off the idle a bit until it was sitting with no brake. Little by little it began to move and increased speed until he was riding the brake again.
All done for today.
I'm sure I just don't have that magic combo on the settings or something else is going on.
Time to drink.
Tomorrows another day.

Yeap you always need to make sure that you have fresh batteries, the car could destroy itself like that in the right condition, you should also install a failsafe to prevent that from happening in the event the batteries die again. Are you turning off the switch while it's cooling down? That will make your batteries last longer. Also, you can use rechargables or use a receiver pack. The rechargeable AA's are more convenient but the receiver hump packs will perform better because they run at 6 volts.

It sounds like you need to check the throttle trim on the control and then adjust your idle. The car was probably speeding up because the tune changes with temp, that's why you should always tune your car after it's warmed up a bit because that elminates another variable. You might try starting the car with it against a wall so it can't go anywhere and adjust your idle screw. I think it's ok for the exhaust to drip during break in cuz you want it to run rich at first. One of the veterans will chime in on the tuning, I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. One more thing, tomorrow when you're breaking it in put on a glove and you want have the blister problem (except for the damage that's already been done of course), but mine healed up in a few days when I had the problem last week.

Congrats on getting your baby up and going! I know it was a proud moment for you and your son. I'm glad for the both of you.

thats great man . i wish i was where your at right now with my baby. but alas it is raining again ALLLLLL day. but thats great for you at least you got something to work with. good luck with it tomorrow

Good weather? Why must you torment me?! It hasn't stopped yet, this was 3-4 hours ago. Northern Kentucky weather for the win.

Well, at least someone is bashing. Here is a view of our weather. :surrender

Why is that snow so... clean?!?!?!? There are no tracks! Forshame. Get out there and mess it up!

Good luck, and grats on getting it running.

sounds like an air leak to me, or REALLY lean and all the pulling flooded it and as the extra fuel burned off it went lean. i would go back to factory on the needles and start over. take the air filter off and look at the slide, it should have a 1mm or so gap at idle. also make sure the radio isnt tripping out.

Haha, well Section 8 took over our complex when HUD started allowing them to live here. They will call the cops on me guaranteed. I wished I lived in a snow free place like the OP. :)

I usually run my truck over at my parent's town home in the field behind our garage. The people there could care less what goes on outside of things that effect them directly. The kids even come out to look at it but are all too scared to try driving it.

Whatever those are. :) Got a bunch of old people in my neighborhood too but they're more interested in how fast it goes than how loud it is.

Edit: sorry gotta a buzz not thinking clearly. Had my temps backwards.

I would agree that it sounds like it is lean. An engine running lean genrally runs better at higher temps, and worse at lower temps. opposite is true for an engine running rich. Hope this helps some.

he must have drank a lot of beer cuz we never heard back from him. Trying to tune a nitro engine will defintely drive a preacher to drink!

We get our share up here in CT. Today we are supposed to get like 4" of rain.
I did have to leave after posting last night. My son had a basketball game.
Anyway, what I don't understand is how it could increase the idle and start picking up speed all by itself? It won't sit still. I'll be checking it out today for airleaks and such. Maybe even try to fire it up in the garage (that should make the bride happy).
I'll post again when I have more.
My son's team has a playoff game today and all he can talk about is the car. I need to refocus that boy for a few hours.

it's a probably a round knob on the transmitter, make sure it's turned all the way down to see if that's why it's idling fast.

if it is blowing oil that is normal if its a bit rich. I also notice it more in different fuels.

well on my T-Maxx I keep it turned down all the time, on my savage I turn the trim know up about a fourth of a turn to start it and then leave it down all the way.

That did the trick! The throttle trim was all the way up. Unreal. I would of fiddled for a long time if that didn't get fixed and probably NEVER got it to run right. Thanks CTM!!
