I have 2 nitros and a fifth scale gasser, but I'm completely new to the electric stuff. In fact, I just bought the rustlers a few hours ago. I'm building a track at home (off road) and my step-dad is getting into RC's some. He's learning to drive, and with the nitros I have to be there to tune them and make sure they are running right. With the electrics, I can turn him loose with one of them while I'm running mine, and he can just drive without getting frustrated. I bought two of them so he can learn how to drive and we can have two competitive vehicles, and I will have something to run when I don't feel like getting all the gas or nitro stuff out, like a quick fix for RC.

Anyway, I know nothing about electric motors. I would like to upgrade the motor setup with something more powerful, but it doesn't have to be brushless or the fastest thing out there. They are the original rustler with the 20 turn mod stinger motors. Could you guys recomend some motor, ESC setups? What else will I need to upgrade to handle the power?

The 20 turn stinger motors were not to fast..A good stock motor with some 3300 stick packs (cheap) would do the trick as far as power to start with, I would look at some better tires and make sure the shocks are up to the task, If your running Nitro then you know how the shocks should feel, I would maybe go up a few weights in the oil, set the ride height, I would look at the sport series for speed controller's (for playing reverse would not be a bad thing) Novak makes some that are in the $60 range..And they will handle a 19 turn if more speed is needed. I would try to not spend to much money on this. I know that some will say get the 4200 batteries but the 3300 are very cheap and hold up better than the larger batteries do. I would be careful buying used speed controller's, only get them from someone you trust, seen way to many people get burned on them..
 
I have ordered some 3300 stick packs already, and I've got a nice charger. I was thinking about a Novak speed control besides the lil that I have heard about electrics has all been good with Novak. What would be a good motor. Will a 19 turn be faster than a 20 turn? I'm sorry to be sucha noob with this stuff.
 
i'm in the same boat as you...just getting into the electric seen to help kill the RC cravings...

the guys at the lhs shop told me about the dynamite tazer ESC. its relavtively cheap, in the 40 buck range and will handle a motor down to 15 turns. (the lower the turn count the faster the motor, so i've been told) i know u dont want to go brushless just yet, but in case you change your mind take a look and the CC sidewinder. total cost is about130 and includes the ESC and 7700 kv motor. the ESC will handle a brushed motor as well. i went for the sidewinder and 3800 packs by venon. the packs were 45 bucks each...not to bad in my opinion.

I don't mind going brushless, it just that I dont HAVE to have it. Have you installed this setup already?? How does it run? What's the run time with that motor, ESC combo and the big batteries?
 
If you haven't heard already, at least I know this from airsoft, Deans connectors are a major improvement on anything electric. I haven't had any on anything I've used, but I know the kid with the ultra-high upgraded gun that used a lot of battery power swore by them and his guns hurt. :)
 
I think I may go with the XL-5 ESC and Titan 12 turn 550 motor from Traxxas. It seems to be a good setup that I know will work together, and it's very cheap. I might order one of these for one Rustler instead of both, and then if I'm dissappointed I can go with the brushless setup on the other one. I would just like to do more research and understand electrics a lil more before I do a brushless, Li-Po setup

i did install the sidewinder (with deans) and the venom packs and i run the packs for about 8 minutes with no issues. i usually dont run them longer than that.
 
How much faster is it than with the old stinger motor?? Did you have any issues with mounting the motor or is it the same size as the one it replaced, so it bolts right in??
 
well I picked up a set of Moab 2.2 tires mounted on chrome rustler wheels. I didn't know if I wanted a tread pattern like this, but I got them for a lil bit of nothing so if they don't work I can get some more and save these or sell them.
 
the stinger is a 540 can so it should bolt right up. the sidewinder motor has a few mounting holes so you can line it up right. the BL set up is considerably faster than the stock motor.

and just to clarify, i have a losi mf2, not a rustler. but the idea is the samel 1/10 stadium truck
 
Charlie, the 12 turn Titan is a dud to say the least. Equivalent to a 19 at best. On my first, (now a parts only since going brushless) I replaced it with a 15 turn Dragon, with better results. The XL 5 will handle it no probs, is dead easy to use and cheap.

Well not that I have a baja, I find myself with a lot of spare time on my hands that used to be spent tuning, adjusting, fixing, replacing, repairing, cleaning, etc... With the baja, none of that stuff has to be done for any period of time, so I had to get into something to keep myself busy. :)
 
Well today I bought an Orion 11 turn motor with a LRP Quantum Comp ESC (very nice ESC from what I can tell) for one of the Rustlers and a 12 turn titan with XL-5 ESC for the other. The reason for the titan is simple, it's cheap and it's faster than what I have. I don't want to spend much money on these trucks because I spotted a Team Associated T4 Race spec truck, and I think I'm going to buy it instead of sinking that money into a brushless rustler.
