Some of you may remember THIS idea from a couple of years ago(wow! it's been that long?)

I said back then that it would get done eventually. Well today is eventually! I originally designed this on the HPI "chubby" Savage cooling head but ended up using an American CNC Machining head. Here's what it looked like before I worked it over.

And here's the finished product. First I machined off the top,then cut the shape. I didn't do any polishing yet,but I think a bead blast and then polish the top and edges would look nice. Let me know what you all think,good or bad :D

I don't know if there's a shop locally that does ceramic coating. Wouldn't that type of coating hold in more heat?

Yes, ANY coating will hold more heat. How much is too much I dont know.

That depends on the coating. Some are designed to insulate, others are designed to increase the surface area of what ever they're applied to in order increase cooling efficiency. Sort of like anodizing, only sexier and more durable. At least that's what I was told.

You can also ceramic coat the top of the piston, and the cap thing that sits on the top of the combustion chamber under the cooling head. Extend that coating through the exhaust tube, and you've got a unique, effective, cool looking modification. Not only will that reduce cylinder head temperatures, the thermal efficiency increase will result in slightly more power! :D

A guy I know in San Antonio, Carlos Tirado. The best powder/ceramic coater I've ever seen.

Nice work indeed. Never seen anything like that before. I see a few cuts and scrapes in your future.lol But well worth every one of them. I like the anodized /polished edges idea. Well done.
 
Great job, that head looks pretty sweet. I wouldn't recommend ceramic coating for this application as it would most definitely hold heat in. Some of the best boat pipes I have run have a ceramic coating on the outside to help keep the heat inside, I would think the same thing would happen with the cooling head.

It depends on the coating. The gold one is designed to seal heat and does so incredibly well. It's used on turbo hot sides which get white hot during boost. Coating the top of the piston is a simple way to help resist damage from running lean. You could probably run slightly leaner with no problems.

Other coatings are designed to shed heat, and look completely different.
