Truck ?

Hey guys long time no talk. I posted about a month ago about a truck for me and you were all very helpful I am getting a revo 3.3 next month for christmas. My new question is what a good nitro truck for my little brother thats pretty good but in the 199 to 250 price range rtr he is only 8 so he dosen't need anything to extreme.

Thanks guys and love the site even though i don't post alot I check this place out at least every other day a ton of great info keep up the good work.

Have you considered an electric?

The Traxxas Stampede XL-5 would be a good first time RC.

You will need a good stick pack and charger which you will need anyway for the batt in the 3.3's ez start.

I got one for my son who is 7 for XMas.

Actually, Robmob makes a great suggestion. My son is 7 and it's just easier for him to throw a couple stick packs in his E-Maxx to play with if I'm not home.

Go with the mini T with match 6 cell pack and reedy hi power motor it will keep right up with your revo on the track.I have 1 with that and it beats my Mt.

The problem with a mini-t is durability. It can's take the abuse that an 8 year old with dish out. Every time my kid used mine it cost me $$$ to get parts and fix it.

If you are looking for something cheap.. I recall RushRC has a few on consignment..they are used. PM RushRC and see if he has them still..

We suggested electric because his son is 8. We also do not know how well his hand/eye coordination. So electric is the logical way to go.

That and frankly, getting to understand the nuances of a nitro engine, from actually starting it to tuning, maintenance and the like can be a bit much for an eight year old. It's not that I question his brother's intellect, but eight year olds aren't really known for their patience.

With a solid electric rig, like the Stampede or Rustler, this young man can learn about the R/C world without having to concern himself with all the variables associated with a nitro rig.

I'd suggest either the Rustler or Stampede and take a few extra dollars, get some high capacity stick packs (at least two or three) and have it! He'll spend more time playing and less time frustrated his car doesn't run.

I think the electric would be great the only reason i mentioned nitro for him is he has a electric we bought from radio shack and you only get like 10 to 12 min out of the 7.2 batt I have 2 of them amnd with both full charge he gets like 20 min between the 2 then 8 hours each to charge. Is that normal?

Just so much down time charging batt that I thought nitro he might have more run time.

You can't really compare a Rat Shack rig with one of those suggested, they really are apples-to-oranges. Maybe go to your LHS and have them show you how much faster they are.

As for the charger, if you are using the wall charger, yeah, it may take 8 hours, but you can buy chargers that'll top them off much, much quicker and they are not that expensive (and usually can charge more than just stick packs).

If you get him a pack in the 3300Mah range, he can run much longer than just 20 minutes, and if he has two or three, he can run for at least a good hour before even needing to charge again. With my son, when he uses up one set of packs, I throw them on the charger. By the time the next pair is done, that first pair is ready to go!

Nice electric with a couple decent packs and charger and you won't be down long. Look at the charger this way, you'll be able to use it too for charging stick packs for the sleazy start on the Revo and your rx packs.

If you are really looking to get him a Nitro than I would suggest that you get a radio with EPA trims. That way you can limit the throw of the servo's. End result will be a child squeezing the trigger full but only getting a set amount of throttle. This can be done for both steering and throttle.

I'd suggest an RC18MT...my daughter is 8 and she beats on it like a woman driver......I keep it bone stock and she has a blast with it.....also cheap to fix.....easy to work on......and it's about 150 RT...you can buy a good battery and charger with the rest of the 250 or so.....I noticed the 1/18 scales aren't too bad on low grass but when it's tall they can get stuck......

I got a dynamite quick charger. It charges the batteries in 15 minutes. Get a couple packs so when your running the one, the other can charge. By the time ya run out of juice, the 2nd battery should be charged. If hes young Id definatly go with a electric. My nephew has a Duratrax Bx buggy (Still running like a champ Monkey!) and a Mini T. Both have been real good to him.

Ok after all your guys great input I have decided on a stampede for him I went to my LHS today and he also said to get him one. He said though thatwith a 3300 15 min is the run time I should get and the fatest charger in the shop was 45 min to charge one?

also his prices seemed high for that charger that took 45 min was $50 and the 3300 batt was $35 is that a good price and whats a better charger?

Make sure you get NiMh batts and not NiCd.
