When I used to have a Savage and I upgraded to the aluminum 3-shoe clutch, it would make that noise because it was spinning against the clutch bell and not grabbing like it should because I installed the shoes wrong.

Sounds like mine did with a broken clutch spring

+1 on the clutch, sounds like the bell may have some play in it as well

Loose clutch bell or the rubber bearings need to be replaced.
