Traxxas or HPI?

Hey y'all. I'm new to this forum and am looking for some advice. I'm sure this has been asked before but I didn't see it on here anywhere. But I'm looking at buying either a Traxxas T-Maxx 3.3 or a HPI Savage X 4.6 and if anyone has any insure on which would be a better buy I would greatly appreciate it. Not into racing but just want one to bash with. I had also looked at the Traxxas Slayer but had seen comments on it saying it didn't go so good in grass, why is that? Tires?

sits lower more for dirt track .grass slows even the taller trucks like the max but you really see it with the lower trucks

The savage is generally considered the toughest basher out there. Theres nothing wrong with the MAXX but if it were me Id get the Savage. Theres alot of after market support for both. The Savage will be bigger than the MAXX. Some people maay find that as a plus and some as a minus.

the tmaxx is gonna need some upgrades to be a good basher. some must haves for it would be aluminum bulkheads and rpm a arms at least.

Since I am not an HPI fan (hence the name) I would roll with the MAXX, you will need upgraded arms for sure liek stated above, but IMO (in my opinion) I would go with the MAXX


PS - Welcome to RCNT.

Also, the Slayer, Slash or anything thats a SCT (short course truck) is meant for a track style bash or racing, totally differant ball game from a MT.

Both trucks would be great. Love my maxx (Now that I upgraded it to the max! with aluminum bulks, chassis braces, shock towers, RPM A arms etc.), but want a savage as a second truck....super tough. Both have loads of upgrades too. I like the Tmaxx for its ease of use, its very user friendly for a beginner.

That is true the MAXX is gonna be more user friendly with the EZ start and its a little easier to work on. The Savage however doesn't require many upgrades to be a hardcore basher. The MAXX will require more along those lines.

if you aren't breaking parts, you aren't beating it hard enough !!! never had a savage, but i love my maxx !

Yes most of hpi's servos are junk and won't last you very long.

I've have both max and savage in my collection, For me it's the savage, it's faster, bigger and moore parts availibility. Mine was the ss 4.6 kit version that I put a shaft start on. It's an absolute beast.

The 4.6 is ready to run (RTR) and the SS is a kit that needs to be built. Of the two, I'd recommend the SS because you do build it. You'll just need to add radio and servos.

That is an awesome video for sure, but that Tmaxx has had some upgrading done to it. Check out Rcnightmare's Tmaxx suck to non suck video where it shows all the upgrades put in to it...albeit, not a crazy amount of upgrading.

That ain't bashing this is bashing! This is me with my Savage XL http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=5zBebuLfPe4 I used to be a big T-MAXX fan an supporter but the simple truth is if you wanna bash and drive get the Savage. If you wanna wrench and sometimes drive get the T-MAXX. Both are fun trucks and the T-MAXX is more user friendly but it lacks in strength and durability compared to the Savage. Plus the Savage has more suspension travel and ground clearence. The diffs are easier to service they can be removed without even having to take the wheels off. The transmission has metal gears instead of plastic and the spur gear can be changed without having to remove the engine. Imho it's just a better built and designed truck in stock form. The T-MAXX requires quite a few upgrades to bring it up to the Savage's level and even then it's still not quite as good just my 2 cents.

^^Not going to lie, the MAXX was bashing harder then you and your Savy. That MAXX was in a area with huge dirt clods that love to break arms and such. You, land on grass, safe and sound.

I am voting for Savage for toughness. I have owned three nitro Maxxs and an E-Maxx. I have own 4 savages including a Flux. The biggest part I have ever broken on a Savage is an engine mount. I hit a rock so hard the inertia of the engine snapped the mount. Took a chunk out of an A-Arm and the bumper but it was good to go. T-Maxx...yeah I have broken some stuff there. But My T-Maxx is as tough as any Savage....$1000 later.
