hi if u were to take one of the drive shafts out of your buggy so it would be two wheel drive on the rear could it or would do harm to my diff would it like melt it or strip it I've got hyper 21 engine cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeers:\:\:\:\

Buggy diffs are pretty tough. I can't even recall anybody blowing one out around here. I think it's worth a shot if you want to try RWD. However, keep in mind that you will need to lock your center diff. If you don't lock it, it will spool out constantly.

hi thanks for your reply but what do u mean buy spool and having to lock up the diff cheeeeeeeeeeers :):)

ok, you kinda have to understand how a differential works..

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential2.htm

so if you remove the front center drive shaft what will happen is the center diff will "spool out". The Ring gear/Diff cup will turn the pinion gears (also known as planetary gears). Initially that will turn the side gears (also known as sun gears). But in the situation as it is, the side gear that is routed to the rear drive shaft encouters resistance due to the drivetrain and traction at the tires. Now since the front shaft has been removed, there is absolutely no resistance on that side of the differential. So what happens now is kind of like electricity... the energy follows the path of least resistance. The rear side of the diff will not turn and the front side of the diff will spin (spool out).

Now if you lock the center diff you wont get this spooling effect. Essentially what locking does is removes the ability of the differential to differentiate speed. In other words, both sides of the diff will always turn at the same speed.. the speed of the ring gear.

If you just want to test this out get yourself some putty and shove it in the diff case with the internal gearing. This way you can remove it if you want to.
