I have never used any type of liquid mask & I just placed an order for some Bob Dively Liquid Masking Film. I usually just tape everything up w/ 3M tape & spray. I have had good results doing this, but I thought I would try some liquid mask. Anyway, are there any tips, pro's, or con's to using this stuff.

Thanks.

Put it on heavy!!!

Dont leave it on for more than a few days.

When you cut it with your razor, DO NOT push down too hard. You dont have to!

Your best bet will be to practice on the inside of a 2 litre bottle.

Yeah, I read that thread. Does the liquid mask stay rubbery or does it get hard & dry up?

Does it leave a residue after you peel it off (will I need to clean the body after I remove the mask)?

Thanks for the info.

If you leave it on too long it will leave a residue you wont be able to get rid of.

It stays rubbery, somewhat anyhow. What you want to do is score the lines lightly, get under the mask where you are going to peel it away with the tip of your favorite razor blade, and pull SLOWLY!

Then, just before you paint, I suggest just running around the hard edges of the masking thats left, to assure no paint seepage. Just make sure your finger is clean and try not to touch the body itself.

the Bob Dively liquid mask that i used reminded me of Elmer's glue for some reason. i wonder if i could use that on a body to mask stuff off?

Elmer's glue would definitely be cheaper than liquid mask. The only concern's would be the adhesive properties & the ability to make clean cut's in it.

BTW, what are the ingredients in liquid mask? Someone who has a bottle check to see what it says. It will probably say elmer's glue.

it doesn't say whats in it. it just says how to use it. also it says DO Not Freeze.. and well mine froze.. and well mine is chunky... lol. I'm gona have to try some elmers glue on my next paint job. too bad i just finished painting 3 bodies...

I have used the Liquid Mask on a few bodies. It works pretty good. I have only had a couple problems. First, if you're painting chrome, you will have to lightly score the outline AFTER you paint and back it because I have had the chrome peel off while I'm trying to take the mask off.
And when I used Faskolor, the liquid mask seemed to get more difficult to peel off when I needed to. I used a toothpick to coax it along. If you're doing an intricate design, be prepared to spend a lot of time getting the mask off after you paint.

i seen a comercial for that stuff awhile ago, they were using it on the corners of molding and stuff. why dont u buy some and try it out? then u call tell us how it worked. :naughty:

I found it at ULine but I have to buy a case of it. Ill try finding it somewhere else and let you all know.

just open up the case.. stick a roll in ur pocket and walk out.. lol. I'm sure u can buy it from the roll some place.

I use liquid mask only for the real hard to mask areas.. Otherwise, I find it to be a real pain in the ass... It has to be put on in layers, and real thick. If you skimp on the mask, you'll be picking that crap off with a hobby knife for hours... If your going to use it, you will need the patience of a saint. I try to use the blue painters tape, and masking sheets from Parma as my primary forms of masking. It does come in handy for the really detailed tight spots you may encounter along the way.

one thing that i found that helps when taking the liquid mask off. it getting the corner of the liquid mask and roll it with ur finger. and it rolls right off the body. so then ur not pulling on it and breaking and tearing it off.
