interesting... ima have to get a set of plastic as well in case i dont like em. i dont want it being all noisy. those rigs @MVRCA and a lot of people i see on youtube run with that loud whine?? oof omg i couldnt stand that, so i may need to stay with plastics if the metals make noise like your saying.
you said save 50 i dont need it, what were you measning? what was 50 extra over that aluminum case you linked, the one i linked was a ridiculous 260!!! you saved me 200 with your link lol
The whine you might be hearing is the scream of the outrunner motors. Plastic transmission gears tend to be fairly quiet.

Man, you guys are cookin' on this thread. I'm pretty gentle on my crawlers, so the factory gears have done well, but steel is a upgrade for sure.
I'm anything but gentle lol I've earned my rep lol
the plastic gears survived for close to 8 months.... so i may just stay at the plastics as theyve done great untill a catastrophe hit.... i just thought the steel stuff would be better but as this conversation progresses I'm now leaning towards the simple fix of swapping for factory replacement.....

yeah the outrunners, the brand you use is a popular brand and each one i see makes that whine. met a bunch at the btc event, id literally pull over to let them get 5-6 trucks ahead so i didnt have to hear it. no offense bro, and it doesn't keep me from watching your cool vids.

I'm kind of the same way, I like how quiet the Hobby wing combo is. I listen to loud equipment every day at work.

right and it being my first motor i guess I'm spoilt on it
i have 3 and ill probably put em in each crawler. as an unintentional bonus it allows my son and his friend to stay on a sort of more even keel
the axial already kinda tops the ecto often

I haven’t needed to swap my plastic gears either!

They shouldn’t be crazy loud, but probably a bit louder than the plastic gears? Just use some grease in there just not too much grease.
The case I saw was the hot racing brand. For the $50 it costs I’d just assume stay with the plastic case. Buy the metal gears for the $30 but save yourself $50 by not getting the hot racing tranny case. Instead use that on some tires! Or….or or….

Well, thinking on this more, it somewhat depends as to how deep you wanna go with the dollars ( of course ). A custom skid and an Axial 3 gear would be an option.

threw the original body on it think it looks kinda mean i may run it this way for a bit. gonna get out this weekend hopefully

ok so i swapped the gears out, still got the clicking sound.. it seems to still pull just fine tho so I'm guessing its my imagination. I'm gonna take it and get it all wet and muddy then take it fully apart and regrease the axles. i got a new set of front driveshafts just in case tho.

also finally got my set of Enduro Steering Plates upgrade Element RC Better Caster and Steering

welp.... it wasn't the gears in transmission that i could tell,it wasn't the front axles. so its gotta be the front driveshaft. i mustve gone too heavy on the locktite on the grub screw cause this thing is fused to the shaft. its gotta be there.. right?? RIGHT!!!!!
THE NEW (oopsie) front uni driveshafts that i ordered look and feel the exact same as the old set, no burs bends or chips, the gears on all of the trans wereall in perfect condition, no bends or missing teeth, no plastic or metal shavings in the blue/grey ooze that used to be marine grease.
i do notice a wiggle on the shaft that connects the driveshaft to the transmission,

but i cleaned it and rolled it many different ways and it SEEMS to be straight with no wobbles. so i checked the bearing and it seemed to be fine as well, but thats where the wobble is.
i repacked it all with grease, reassembled it, and now we going back to the old method of driving... driving it like i WANT to break it. we gonna rip this transmission all to poop, then get a new one. I'm really wanting to get a traxxas 2 speed transmission, but I'm not at a level where i can fab a plate or anything, so we just gonna swap it for another stealth x in a month or so when my cash flow is back to normal working levels.

So you found the wobble in the shaft or the bearing?
I can't wait to hear how long it takes to break this now that you're actually trying to break it! 🤣

the wobble seemed to be in the bearing but after i reseated it and snugged it up it still wobbles, I'm thinking its something bent in this piece

right where the grub screw attatches to the shaft coming off the transmission. thats where the fusion has happened, maybe its bent and thats why its not coming out instead of the locktite,

in this pic you can see the drive shaft stuck on laying on the wires near the top. that shaft won't come free but it used to. i know that as I've swapped em out before. so if everything else is ok, except this piece being stuck, thats implying that thats where the issue lies. maybe.
i could also have a poltergeist. i havent sent the rc gods a suitable offering in awhile. maybe they are demanding sacrifice

Take your soldering iron and put it right on the head of that screw for 10-20 seconds to soften the loctite
thats a fantastic idea!! i was looking at it trying to figure a way to hit it with the torch but that wasn't possible!! awesome idea

I had a wobble coming from the diff case being worn so that the output shaft could wiggle up and down.
if it was "down" you'd never see a wobble or feel a hint of vibration but when it slipped up, the diff lobed inside the case and the shaft, cup and shaft were ALL wobbling like the wheel was 1/2 filled with lead! Awful shake to it but a new case fixed us right up!
A bent output shaft makes sense too.

the son and i hit the trail today, was such a beautiful day we had to take advantage of it. his basecamp is down atm, so he drove the bronco. i swapped out the front tires on the old man and added some wheel weights to the axles up front.

realized the Old Man hasnt crawled across the tree yet so we remedied that problem.

Love it! When you eased ovet the bump in the tree I was on the edge of my seat. Love your trail drives. Love Vegetachu's hat too! 🤣

You guys need to bring a leaf blower with you! 😜
