Just bashed my Savage for a little bit, towards the end I noticed the steering was non-existent. Managed to run it out of fuel, then checked the steering.

If I hold the truck off the ground and steer, works fine. Once there is any resistance against the wheels I can hear and see the servo gears free spinning.

Could my servo saver be too tight? I did tighten it down some when working on the truck recently. Or is the servo just toast? I'm not so sure considering it does steer at some point.

(its a Bluebird servo, BTW.......up until now absolutely no troubles with it!)

Thanks in advance.

could be the servo is stripped or the splines on the saver is stripped. i would bet the latter.

Just took it apart real quick.

The servo saver is an HPI aluminum cam-type, so I'm not really sure there are any gears to strip. I loosened it back to HPI specs (it was a little tighter than spec but nothing major) and the servo still "free wheels" when there is resistance against the wheels.

I'm thinking something internal to the servo is busted, but I havent taken it apart to check. Probably just better off getting a new servo, I think. Something Hi-Tec perhaps.

I tell ya, Chris, sounds to me like an internal gear in the servo let go on ya! It's happened to me before. Hi-Tec is a great brand to consider, just insure the torque rating is high!

Good luck!

I think what he meant was that the splines on the servo horn that connect to the servo may be stripped. Or the splines on the servo output shaft are stripped. Not the actual steering mechanism on the truck. Just the bits bolted directly to the servo.

Rechecked all that stuff, pulled the servo out and just ran the servo. If I use it without any force on the metal output horn of the servo, it works fine. If I use pliers to grip the metal horn and then "capture" the servo so it doesn't move, the horn just free wheels while the motor spins. Definitely looks like something internal is toasted.

New servo time I guess........holiday weekend too, I guess I'm at the mercy of my LHS (which isnt cheap, and isnt very local either!)

Picked up a HiTec 5645MG today.......wasn't too overpriced, and I like the extra torque vs the analog version.
