Sleeve Pin Alignment!

How important is the alignment pin that aligns the Sleeve of an engine? It’s the pin located above the Exhaust header. Right on top of the sleeve, there is a slot where a pin is placed so that the alignment of the sleeve is correct.

Would it be ok if I run the engine without that pin? Even though the alignment is perfect? or will i have problems with the sleeve moving around?

I wouldn't run it without the pin..But it would be hard for the sleeve to turn with the heatsink tightened down on it..

Some engines don't even have a pin. They just have a mark for alignment purposes. I think you should be fine.

good, since i acedentally "ripped" the pin out and the place where it should be installed is blocked by its other half, and there isnt a way i can really take it out, unless i use a drill, but that is to much trouble if it is fine to use without it.

I don't think my orion wasp 18 had the guide pin. I had to mark the sleeve and crank case when I was working on it... then retard me put the piston in backwards and it ran like doodee. The stupid thing fell out before I could tell it's orientation. Normally you have to fight to get them out.

If you have trouble lining it up I would assume you could look in the exhaust port as you slide the sleeve in and make sure its all lined up. All my engines have had a pin but I think its only to line it up, I think you should be fine.

You'll be fine without it........just make sure it's lined up like AC said........I've had to do it like that before, worked just fine.........just be sure to tighten the head bolts good, don't over tighten though.......

Hi, I ran the older K&B Outboards for years, they never did have an alignment pin.
Use'ta get real fussy with lining the sleeve up while looking thru the exhaust port,,
you just want make sure you don't get it too far off with the smaller engines.

nah I don’t think ill have any trouble aligning it since the hole where the pin goes through is still visible and the sleeve has a slot in it where the pin would go in, I can just align that slot with the hole.
