I just picked up an older used SC10 4x4 RTR truck that is box stock with the XP3SS radio and sensor less motor and ESC. I have always run sensored brushless systems for racing and this is the first non sensored system I've used. Throttle response is poor when first getting under way, and is just plain awful when I try to go into reverse.

This is the older SC10 with the toothed belt for the 4wd system, so it will be my basher / for fun truck. I have re-calibrated the ESC but that did nothing. Is the cogging and awful initial throttle response normal?

I should add that I've added the upper chassis brace and rear shock tower, and also changed the slipper to the updated version with the basket and different slipper cover.

YES, for early generation sensorless components, newer generation stuff made in the last 10+ years have drastically improved, though they still tend to cog a little, but very much acceptable. Most bashers are going WOT anyway so not like you're crawling.

Here's a sensorless RTR that has minimal cogging to have an example to compare with on my basher from 9 years ago:

I like your idea of using garden hose to setup a track.
