Traxxas XRT steering servo issues.

I will continue this thread and my problems to try and help others. For example, if someone is having a similar problem.

I now feel very confident in saying TSM is indeed causing the servo to overheat on my particular XRT. I've turned it off and noticed a significant reduction in heat and not to mention no more shutting down. That's the good news, the bad news is this particular RC doesn't handle nearly as well with it turned off. So the question now is will the new servo be stronger and be able to handle TSM... we shall see soon enough.
You don’t need the tsm, you need to learn how to drive it how it drives. Leave it off and use light steering adjustments at high speeds. Turn the dual rate down if you need to. It isn’t the tsm at all, that is just how the thing drives.
Traxxas isn’t top tier by any means. I look forward to your progress in this hobby.

Yep, I’m betting that’s your problem and I’m betting you’ll learn to drive it turned off pretty quick. It lcg makes it a very stable platform. You’ll pick it up quickly.

So I got the 2085X installed and the strength of the steering is much better. I also adjusted my steering turnbuckle to where my steering trim can be set at the mid-point to allow the car to travel as straight as possible. ( OCD about that) In general, I’ve done a quite a bit of work to fine tine the steering itself.

For anybody wondering TSM will still cause the servo to heat up and probably overheat if i would let it. So obviously it is best turned off.

So the standard 2085 has plastic gears and the 2085X (2085R?) has metal gears?
Something like that. But basically, the 2085 part stands for garbage, and the rest is not important 😄

What about the Traxxas 2255 servo with 400 oz-in at 6V? Looks decent. But just remember , I don’t know what I’m talking about.
I wouldn't spend a dime on any Traxxas servo.

That seems to be the popular opinion so far. I had no idea they were that bad.
Way overpriced, low quality, etc. Not worth installing in an RC. All RTR servos are garbage for that matter. They put the cheapest stuff they can in all RTR RC's.

Perhaps I should get myself a roller for my next RC. That way I can pick out the electronics and motor that I want.

Yup. So they could make bank off selling the electronics.
I’ll have to do some research later on today and see which brands still sell rollers. I thought Losi used to have a few good ones available but that was a while ago. Maybe team associated?

I’m getting off topic here. So Traxxas has crappy electronics, got it.

Direct power servo from nsdrc. Or a nitro pro, I know they aren’t cheap, but they are the bees knees.
For that truck, go with direct power.
I’m unfamiliar with that term. I’ll have to do some googling. What are some other servos (brands) that the OP should consider for his XRT?

Direct power is powered from the battery directly.
For brands, anything but traxxas garbage. I usually go with the NSDRC rs500B because it's about $60. They have a couple cheap servos that perform very well.

Nice. I had a Savox on an MT10 and it worked flawlessly.
