Hi everyone. I have a bone stock scx24 yellow jeep body and I want to start modding it, but I don’t know where to start.

There’s so much information out there and so many parts available. I want to put bigger tires on it, add weight so it doesn’t tip over, and upgrade the servo and motor. If I lift the vehicle do I need longer drive shafts? Is injora a good place for me to source all this stuff?

I’ll admit, I’m not looking forward to working on this small rig. It seems like a huge PITA, but I’m going to force myself to learn.

If you want performance, I wouldn't lift it. I'd lower it a bit by getting some droop in the shocks. The stock springs are kinda perfect for this, and all the aftermarket shocks I have seen are more for looks than anything, sitting the truck high, with the shocks fully extended. No real truck is setup with the shocks like that. Just my 2 cents.

As for weight, get you a brass front diff cover, and some brass hexes. You can extend the hexes a bit with a kit, but they will add scrub steer, which is harder on your servo. I wouldn't go too crazy adding weight until you drive it more. You'll learn a lot more putting a part on and seeing how she goes, and see what it needs.

There are tons of servo options. I just grabbed one of the Ecopower WP173-X24 servos, and while I have yet to test it on 8.4v, it's plenty peppy on 6.0v. The plain old Emax servo setup isn't bad either.

Wheels are a good option. Again, I'd probably go easy on the weight here. I don't think these trucks need heavy wheels. You'd be better off buying aluminum axle housings, and have less rotational baggage.

And yeah, Injora makes really nice stuff. So does Treal. Little Guy Racing Parts is coming out with some really unique and innovative stuff too.

As far as working on them, get you an illuminated magnifying headset if you need better eyes. These are fantastic. A few of the guys here have bought them as well, and they like them too.

For the SCX24, I'd say wheel tires and servo are high on the list, if you upgrade the servo, I would get some metal steering links. The plastic links are a bit sloppy.

I love Injora products, buy with confidence.

It's better to upgrade slowly, and see how it affects your crawler. Not all upgrades are beneficial. Enjoy your crawler, and the upgrade process.

I feel ya...I've got about $200 in upgrades and a SCX24 in pieces...lol - it's tiny...I need magnification to work on parts of it...going to be a slow build for this ol' guy.
 
I put bigger tires and wheels. Also brass rings on the front wheels and a brass dif cover. The taller shocks don't do anything for handling. It just raises the center of gravity, not worth it. The bigger tires do rub a bit. These mods were also done to the AX24 I have and made a huge performance difference.

All good advice above ^

I'd recommend upgrading the tyres and servo first. Good value upgrades. I didn't realise how bad the stock tyres were until I fitted Injora tyres.

As said above, add a bit of brass weight down low as possible. Like diff cover, steering knuckles or hexs. I wouldn't recommend lifting it. If anything lower it.

From my experience Injora has good products. Mofo RC is also good.
 
I have the Deadbolt. so apologies if these thoughts are irrelevant for the jeep. I am no expert but after 2 years this is my experience. Really all my upgrades have come about thanks to the helpful members of this forum.

1. Far too tippy and unstable. Can be improved by adding weight on axles and wheels, widen the wheelbase with hex adaptors on axle and negative offset beadlocks.
2. Improve grip with better tires IMHO the best are the huge Injora 65*19mm Comp Pin Mult Terrains followed by mudslingers but both will need body to be cut and they spoil the scaling if that is important to you.
3. It might be worth upgrading the servo to help with the wider wheelbase and weight. I have burnt out 1 motor so worth having a spare.
4. A bit too slow for me so I have put in 13T cog and worm gears in the differentials - much happier with the 23% improved speed.

I have done several other things too but these 4 seem to have made the most difference for the least money. I used to focus on lowering it as Warby suggests. However, I now have 43mm shocks front and rear, and while this may make it less stable, the improved ground clearance makes it a better crawler and a more enjoyable experience for the terrain I use it one. It all depends on what you want to do with it, there are just so many options!

Main thing is to enjoy and have fun
 
Same happened to me, so much info! What I consider necessary is:
Servo upgrade (along with the mount)
High clearance links
Diff covers
Tires
To start with. I have a few extra parts that I will never use that fit the wrangler, if you’re interested in them you can have them.

Rims and tires are always a great place to start. It gives the truck a new personality and improves performance. Super tall tires will require trimming of your body. YouTube is a great source of information. 24yep has a video about tires that helped be a lot. Here is a good idea of how much they can change the look. Keep building and post pictures.

This is great advice there are "upgrades" that will actually hurt performance. Go slow Orr crawl some might say.
