I've heard the savage xl 5.9 motor has been known to have alot of problems.. but it does look like an amazing truck and the XXL looks really nice aswell. Others will chime in for a more detailed description of both. Good luck!
*EDIT* So far looking at the losi XXL it has my vote.. looking at this review i really like it. I also love that fact you can use pullstart and roto start witch is very smart. and i also love the radio they supply with the kit. Over all i would choose this over the savage.

Easy: Savage X 4.6. Avoid the 5.9 as it is more thirsty and doesn't deliver that much more power.

^ i agree, also the x 4.6 seems to last forever on gas for me... i can go quite along time of some hardcore driving and it almost seems like the whole day i wont go through many tanks at all. and sometimes i even can finish a tank because I'm like .. ok i just feel like taking a break its lasting forever. so i think the 4.6 with a good tune will actually be pretty good choice but i think hes looking for a larger truck. but if he does want to over look the size.. savage x 4.6 one of the best monstertrucks you can buy period.
