Is there an easier way to remove it other that having to remove the engine itself to slide it off? I really don't want to take the engine out but it looks like I'm going to have to unless one of you know an easier way.

HI !! Unscrew and take off the plastic rollcage, then unscrew the 2 or 3 screws on top of the gear box, the top of the casing with the spur should come off. It should be in your manual too.(if its the savage x its on page 22 spur gear maintenance)

If this is a standard Savage not an X the engine will have to come off since the CB is in the way. I am not too sure on the X how easy it is to change the spur. Servicing the internal Tranny is easier but not clear on the spur.

if its the old style you ahve to remove the engine, or do what i did and remove the whole rear end. if its the x then yes you can take the top off the trans and remove the whole shaft easyly

Yeah I have Savage 21. Had to take the engine out. Its a pain in the.....to do it though.
Had to remove the skid plates take engine out, fix spur gear mess with engine to get proper alignment then reassemble. Uhh so much work for such a simple task.

About the Savage X though, think I could get a Savage X transmission and switch it with mine?

You don't have to take off skid plates to remove the engine. Unless your running some after market stuff. The engine mount bolts are accessible from the bottom through the skid. 4 bolts, header spring, throttle ball cup, engine is out. 5 minutes tops.

Yeah I have the RPM skid plates and I don't have a Hex that reaches deep enough. I need to invest in a good set of Hex Drivers......I have one of those stupid multihex things where they fold out.

Yes, the vintage Savage requires engine removal to R/R the spur. Ease of maintenance is the main reason I installed the "X" chassis on my old Savage SS. I can pull the diffs in about 5 minutes, transmisson parts in less than that.

Yes; it's a direct drop-in, and all your internals will fit it (I did it to mine, makes life a LOT easier). However, if you're going to upgrade the case, now is the time to do all the other upgrades, like the 3 speed, brakes and reverse, if you are even remotely interested in them. Otherwise, you'll have to pull the trans out of the truck yet-again.
