I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT RC..but My son received a USED MGT nitro for christmas from his grandpa. i was able to get it started. yay. but the steering and transmission dont seem to be responding that well. there is SOME response but barely. what is the process of elimination to figure out the issue?

Number one....Batteries. Alkaline or a rechargeable 5 cell, 6V hump pack in the car. Alkaline batteries in the controller. After that's done, get back to us with any info.

fresh batteries in remote. not sure what a hump pack is but i put new batteries in the car as well.

same results.. i can tell it wants to work..

Steering is sometimes an issue when the car is on the floor due to increased friction. Hold it off the floor and see if it steers better. If it does it will probably be fine once it's running on the ground. Disconnect the linkage and see if the carb slide moves freely by hand and see if the servo goes full travel while it's disconnected. If the slide is sticky it will need to be cleaned and lubed. Same goes for the steering. It might need to be adjusted and lubed after it's been sitting for a long time.

above is a video i took. maybe it will shed light .. i dont know what a carb slide is and not sure what linkage you are referring to

is a chance it could be the servo saver being worn. look at the bottom of the chassis on the servo. i would pop off the servo horn to check them.
quick question, what is your radio/tx look like?
does it look like this:

if so plug your battery into the channel 4 slot, not the battery slot.
battery slot limits the voltage to 4.8-5v.
i would really recomend getting a battery pack like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Fconegy-Batt...51GM53HT2WJ&psc=1&refRID=AQTQJM4HK51GM53HT2WJ
these are big trucks with big wheels/tires and need as much juice to the servo as you can safely give them, and cheaper than buying AAs in the long run.

Yeah I think bad servo or locked up servo from sitting so long.... rusty inside there maybe?

could definitely be corrosion on the wires/internals, could be the gears got all gummed up, or could have just failed. seems sitting for long periods of time is the death of many a servo.
for replacement i have been using Hitec HS645, Hitec HS646wp, or Hitec HS5645 servos in my MGTs and have been happy. if you do get one of those you will really want to get a 6v hump pack battery though.
these are really fun, very durable trucks. seems yours even has the upgraded FT chassis and aluminum shock caps on it too!

You may also want to look into getting a hump pack for it. Alkalines aren't great for high current applications. If you must run alkalines, run a good brand, duracell/engergizer/etc.

I'm not sure what fits that truck directly, but a good NiMH 5 cell 2/3A hump pack will work a lot better than any alkaline will.

This is a cheap one with a charger:

If the pack doesn't work well, you can get a better brand one:
https://www.amazon.com/Venom-1600mAh-5-Cell-Receiver-Battery/dp/B000RRQPKA

I use a RC charger for my receiver packs, but for someone new, getting an overnight wall charger works just as well, but takes longer. I charge my hump packs at 1A. Wall chargers usually are between 200-300mah, so for a 1600mah pack, it takes 6-8 hours to charge and they do so at such a low rate, that you can let it sit overnight and it won't hurt it much.

For my glow heaters, I use an AA sized warmer and take a couple cells with me in my pitbag. I've found the precharged AA's work well.
https://www.amazon.com/ShareGoo-Ignitor-Igniter-Starter-Monster/dp/B075LM3BJ4

https://www.amazon.com/Energizer-Rechargeable-Auto-Safety-Over-charge-Protection/dp/B00IM3P8GS

I use an RC charger to charge mine, but that will work too.
