OK, Fiorano? 94% grip? You're cruel. I haven't run it yet, but I can't imagine getting through that infield chicane in any decent way with that little grip.

94%! LMAO

I was practicing yesterday at 100% since I didn't know what the actual setting was going to be. I was pretty pleased with the grip I had in the infield from the start and was only focusing on my timing coming into the turns. So much for that. I can't wait to get home and try it at 94%.

I haven't even looked at the track yet. I'll run some practice tonight.

One of my biggest problems(aside from lack of experience)is hearing. Since I'm in a small house and run late at night I have to keep the volume down. Couple that with running the a/c and having the noisy return duct 10ft behind me make it really hard to hear. I haven't been able figure out why the headphone jack on the computer doesn't work but it would sure help if it did.

Round 2

6/08/2009

Two races down and the championship lead looks much the same as it did last year. However, this weeks event was not more of the same further down the field. In fact, for majority of the race the race winner, Lessen was further down the field. Right out of the gate Candyman proved just how fast he is at RC Speedway and he held what was a commanding lead all the way until lap 111. Unfortunately the problems for Candyman started a bit earlier than that. A shakup really put a dent in Candymans concentration after his final pistop and his rhythm just about completely went away. Lessen's proven consistancy allowed him to catch up even after a very lengthy mid-race pitstop for fuel and tires. A technical problem for our 3rd expected podium finisher will tally the first DNF of the 2009 season and actually the first DNF in the short history of the VRCNT Championship. But all is not lost for Robmob. Although round 2 was certainly not what Rob expected or hoped for, points gained is still much more than points lost. Fortunately, the field is still rather small and Robmob will still take home 5th place points to add to his season total. Savagefan04 and Racer_1966 are both big winners this week thanks to Robmob's technical issues. Racer takes a podium finish in only his 2nd VRCNT start and SF4 finishes 4th for the weekend. Lessen now has a points total of 160 with 2 wins and Candyman trails by 16 points. Racer_1966 is the new 3rd place contender with Robmob following by a mere 5 points with Savagefan04 only 6 points behind him.

Oh yeah. 94% throws the setup I had out the window.

Well, the new "last run counts" rule has me 2nd guessing a lot of things. So I'm still working through that. If I pieced together a consistent 15 mins, I might have come close to 120. But I also know that 1 or 2 significant offs and I would have been dead meat. So I'm still fighting the psychology of it.

Here is my philosophy on the matter.

If I am sure I can improve my position I will make another run without hesitation. Even with how I got hosed at Speedway, I would do it again just to try and add to the point total if possible.

Last good run counts is basically how all the races I do outside of VRC is done. 2 heats and a main with the main being the only race that really counts.

I've got question about the points. The results from VRC says Rob still got the 3rd place points, do you go back and correct that or how does that work? Just curious after reading the Chronicle Post. Nice write up again BTW!

So I've been working on my setup a bit today. I always start off with the basic setup and go from there. Man, that car was a handle to begin with. Bad push on light throttle, bad loose on heavy throttle, didn't handle worth a damn, the steering feel was not to my liking at all. I got it pretty good now. It could probably be better, but I'm pretty happy with it for the amount of time I have spent fiddling.

i just run my set up from the last weeks race...then mod it a bit but nothing major. i have come to accept i just do know enough about suspension changes to make a serious run.

ahhh phooey Gabe. That's what we're here for. If you have any questions about how to make your car better please don't hesitate to ask. I'm more than willing to help you with setup and I've love even more to hear opinions for the other guys like Jeff and Rob. The most important thing is not to look for speed but to look for comfort. Also, you only want to adjust one thing at a time. For instance, of all things I didn't like with the setup I started with I found it hardest to deal with being so loose on heavy throttle. Therefore, that was the first problem I tackled.

I'm still shaky on my set. I went for my typical toe out on the rear and it really loosened the car crazy. So toe in seems to keep it quiet. Haven't been able to work much more because I'm having trouble with my USB adapter. I'm panicked because I might not even be able to make a run. When I had a set that I kinda liked, I was running about a 20 flat for most laps. Not sure where that stacks up. With the lack of grip, you have to be slow and methodical. Not much room to really run up the throttle on this one.

You might need to take that adapter apart and hit it with a soldering iron. I had issues with mine last year but I fixed it with a little head. There are four prongs that connect the jack to the pc board. Those connections got weakened on mine. I bet you are having the same issue. It's an easy fix though. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. Take the casing off and hit all four with the iron. Done.

20 flat is pretty good. I'm not very consistant but when I get comfortable I'm around 19.9 - 20.4. I don't know if it's this track or the grip level (maybe a combination of both) but laptimes are very unpredictable. I've run laps I was sure would be in the 19s and they end up being 20.3.

OK, I lied. So I exagerrated a little. I tried another test with the same setup and I'm actually averaging somewhere in the low-mid 21s. With only a couple 19s. However, one little sway bar change and I'm consistantly under 20 seconds. Amazing what one little adjustment can do. I'm a tick loose again so I'm gonna have to counter that adjustment some.

I just put an official run in. I'm not that thrilled with it. I mentioned a couple posts up tha I had a fast setup but it was a tick loose. I did something at the back end to keep it planted and the car became much more stable in practice but it wasn't as fast and it also became much more line sensitive. I think I'll work on that a tad and see if I feel comfortable with trying another run if I feel like it's a better setup for race conditions.

I cannot get comfortable at this track for some reason. I get in a zone for a few laps then I lose it. When I first got this setup to where it is now I ran like 8-10 sub20 second laps consecutively in practice. For whatever reason, I have not been able to find that groove. I could also swear the race grip is slightly different than the same practice grip but maybe that's just me. I'm not feeling very confident about this round. I may try again but I think I'm practiced out. If I give it another go I just need to focus better and make the best of my car. I know it's fast, it's all about what's going on in my head.

There's no doubt it's difficult to moderate your aggressiveness with practical patience on this one. I keep trying to be gung ho and push through the chicane. But you just can't do that. Plus I keep thinking I can just sweep the corner at the end of the front straight. Nope. It really is a situation where you just have to be very deliberate. And even then it's still tricky. Thanks for the low grip, Josh.
