what radio are you using for racing, and are the expensive radios really neccessary for channel spectrum and capability?

I have a JR XR2i and it works great. Cheap, too! payed 100 bucks for it out the door :) So far I get about 1000 yard range (almost a mile, people!) on full batteries. It's a computer system so using high torque servos won't cost you. The only problem I have is that the endpoint adjustments aren't quite far enough some times, but I'm sure that a different servo would fix that.

The only disadvantage is it uses old fashioned crystals, and has no built in failsafe. Doesn't glitch though.

So what is the price point for a state of the art, not break the bank, radio, that pretty well does it all?

Futaba 3PKS with FASST. Switched from Nomadio Sensor. Prior to that I ran an M8 w/ Spektrum. The 3PK and M11 are probably the two most common radio's I see on the driver's stand. IMO, the little extra you pay for some of the added features are well worth it as well as the speed (response time)

Your right to a point, unless you only club race from time to time!! If you dont race a lot, a simple computer radio is fine. Something with atleast EPA,servo switching and such. Since I have actually raced very little in the past 2 years,I have not felt the need to upgrade my old JR XR3i. It is a decent radio, and with the Spectrum radios out there, having to use crystals is no biggie, since there are so few of us using them, its not hard to get a freq clip!!
