hi all. i have a few quick tips to share.

1. DO NOT USE CHEAP PAINTS! Use only paint approved for the type of body material. don't use wood paints like my car's last owner did. I'm still getting paint out of places i didnt even know it had.

2. Cut and Trim the body before painting so you don't mess it up.

3. After painting your first stage of paint, let it dry overnight to ensure you dont mix them paints on accident.

4. Just too make it look cooler, use a type of CRYTSAL CLEAR ENAMEL to spray on the outside of the body to give it that glossy look. i also used it on my wheels when i painted them black. check it out in my photo album. its my car "mystik" album.

Why would you need to do this? The lexan itself works as a clear, and being .40-.60 thick, I dont think your gonna get it much shinier

Maybe you didn't know that there's a clear mask that needs to be removed.
Name ONE 'CRYTSAL' clear enamel that can give a higher gloss than the lexan itself.
Name ONE 'CRYTSAL' clear enamel that won't crack off the lid.

dont mix them paints on accident.
I'll make absolutely sure I 'dont mix them paints on accident.'

check it out in my photo album. its my car "mystik" album.
You have no photos posted on this forum.

CAM, have you ever rolled your car a lot and looked at all the scratches on it? the enamel that i used filled the scratches and gave it that fresh body shine.

ROLEX, yes i did know about the mask. RUST-OLEUM Crystal clear enamel. that is the stuff i used. it WILL NOT crack off. used it before and still sticking. And i do relize there are no pics. the photo gallery wont accept them. i posted this before i tried to upload.

and, please, dont put me down like that again. I've used and used this stuff before. I KNOW WHAT I'm TAKLING ABOUT!!!

OK, lets settle down and not start a flame war here. Archer, I understand that your simply trying to share your knowledge and that alone is greatly appreciated. Thank you. But I do kinda have to side with Rolex here. Browse the body shop forum for any of the rigs that Rolex and others have done and you'll see that they have mad skill (Tow Mater is still my fav!). Try uploading your pics to somewhere like photo bucket and then use the IMG link provided by the service to post the images here in the forum. Maybe once we see some examples of your skill, you'll be taken more seriously.

Thanks

yeah i did see rolex's rigs. they are sweet. but I'm just trying to say what i know and what i use. is there a problem with that from a newbie??? not trying to be rude.

no archer there isnt anything wrong with it. You just have went about it in the wrong way. I see you have a total of 5 posts on here and are already telling people how to do this or that.. I dont argue the fact that you may know what your doing. but to everyone on this site you are a noob. untill you prove yourself by helping others, showing your work, and being an all around good dude, everyone is going to take your 4th post "how to" with a grain of salt.

also, if you plan on putting up a "how to" i assume you will want many people to read it, benefit from it, and refer back to it for a long time to come. I would advise before posting such an "informative" item that you check and double check for proper spelling and english.

some veteran painters on here may take offence when you post up such a simple how to after being here all of a few days, as most of the advice you give is basicaly common knowledge.

now if this was an indept how to on true flames or a how to on ghosting effects and you put up examples of your work using these methods you may have been taken more seriously

Ill stick to the ways I have been painting which have been doing just fine for years and not to sound like a pompous ass, but has won me some contests and been published a few times..
Nothing out of a "Krylon Can" will EVER get put on ANY of my lexan bodies. Sorry. its nice your trying to help out and give some people some pointers, but like stated above, if you look in the body shop section on here, theres ALOT of skill in here.

Sorry if I came off a little harsh last night, but all too often a brand new member comes off as a total expert, and has nothing but bogus information.
We appreciate your wanting to pitch in, but hang around for a while, get familiar with the members and offer your advise when you think you can help out.

Other than that, welcome to the forum.

Why not? I have several bodies at the moment, all painted with Krylon. A hyper 7, Jeep Rubicon for my tuber, and I just finished a CJ8 for my Scorpion that came out way too cool, also Krylon.

I have been using Krylon ultra flat black for years on the outside of bodies, it holds up extremely well, and when it starts looking crappy you can mask it off and shoot a fresh coat on it. The CJ8 I just finished was a beat up old body with a terrible paint job on it. But you would never know it by looking at it now. I have destroyed the bodies I painted with ultra flat before chipping any paint off.

Heres one of them...

Are you talking about painting the inside with Krylon paints? If that works for you, than more power to ya. But me, Id rather just stick to lexan paint. I've also never painted a one colored body in my life, so thats another reason. I know alot of the crawler guys paint the outside flat black but they also paint the inside to look like rust when they scratch away. But thats been sooo over done, that like I said before, NO krylon paint will ever be put on any of my lexan bodies. Now if I was to do a hard poly carb body, then maybe Id consider it considering thats more bondable. I just dont feel like scuffing the poop out of the inside of a body to get some so-so paint to stick. Id rather just pay the $3.00 and paint it with actual lexan paint.

I paint the outside for a flat scheme, which you are NOT going to get with lexan paint on the inside. And like you think that is sooo overdone, so is doing what everyone else has done a million times over. Krylon ultra flat bonds as well as any lexan paint I have ever used, holds up just as well too, and I DON'T have to scratch the poop out of anything to get it to adhere well. Nor is it so-so paint.

But I can tell from your posts you have the don't confuse me with facts my minds already made up attitude. Telling those who are actually doing it that it can't be done, or shouldn't be done.

Btw, I paint plenty of bodies with lexan paint, but I like different look once in a while.

But hey, don't bother ever trying anything different, that would be ludicrous.

Maybe I came off wrong. I didnt mean it to sound the way you took it at all. So I appologize for that. I didnt mean no harm or to come off as a know it all ass. So again, if I came off that way, I'm sorry.
I know alot of people do that flat paints or use the Krylon on the outside and they seem to like to results. I'm simply saying that for me, I choose not to use it and probably never will. The flat look is pretty cool, but not my cup of tea. Different strokes for different folks. When I paint a body, I try to paint it unlike other stuff I have seen, which I agree with you is getting harder and harder to do these days.
Have you painted the inside of a body with Fusion paint? Without scuffing it up? How does that work for ya, because I havnt heard good things, but again if it works for you, thats awesome.
My personal preferance would be to just use lexan paint when painting the inside of bodies and not having to worry about it. But again, thats just me.

Personally, I use a scotch brite pad and scuff the inside of every body I paint. It only take a few minutes and it certainly doesn't hurt as long as you are not painting chrome.

Man, had to pop a bag of popcorn to read this post. Its quite entertaining. Yet, (sigh) pointless as hell.

But that jeep does look amazing. Thinking of attempting something like that for my axial.

The CJ8 is chopped for the crawler. I want to get another rubicon lid now and paint it to look like my new 89 YJ. Unfortunately no one ever made a YJ square headlight version lexan lid. Tamiya made a hard body YJ, but it has long been discontinued, and when you can find one it will cost you $300 just for the body.
