Proline is going to release a conversion kit to convert a 5B to a truck.

No word yet on availability or pricing.

Unless it's 4WD then I say the same thing about this as I do the HPI 5T - it's silly. Nothing but longer body posts and a truck body.

I can understand why Proline would do something like this, as they are not in the business to completely redo any model on the shelf. Changing body mounts, tires and body is something I could see and understand from them.

HPI on the other hand, I think they've dropped the ball on the 5T.

Looks sweet.

I agree 4WD would be sweet. But if it was 4wd than it would not be a baja it would be a monster truck. Which would be awesome also! Maybe locking diffs from the radio and a throwback to the bruiser. Have 2wd, 4low and 4high with locking diffs.

Reminds me of the "MT" conversion they sold for the OG RC10. Nothing but a truck lid, tires/wheels, longer body mounts and front arms. I still had to re gear for the tires. I had to buy taller gears and pinions PLUS a stronger motor.Proline puts interest but HPI needs to address it directly.

It sounds like mixed reviews of this Proline baja truck kit. But does anybody have any hands on experience with it? Will the extended front body posts hold up? From the pic on Proline's site, even though there are four of them up front I'd still worry they'd snap. Does anyone agree or are the posts made of that fancy nylon that RPM uses?

Personally I don't think the body posts will hold up since the Baja is so heavy.

It needs to also have the side mounting points like the 5T has. Anybody considering this conversion should also purchase the 5T side guards with body mounts. Assuming the Proline body is the same width as HPI's 5T body that is.

HPI on the other hand, I think they've dropped the ball on the 5T.

I completely agree. The darn thing is 1:5 scale. They got all the room in the world to make that thing 4WD. I guess the bottom line is that it's more cost effective to copy the 5b with minor modifications. I do agree though, they're missing out on an opportunity to reinvent 1:5 scale to the masses.

HPI has already reinvented 5th scale for the masses when they released the 5B. The release of the 5T builds on the success of the 5T and unlike the Proline conversion, isn't just different tires and body.

If they want to continue their success, they will need to release a 4WD. We can only cross our fingers at this point.

I would like to point out that the current chassis does not lend itself very well as a 4WD platform. HPI will have to come out with an all new design for it to work.

That's kind of what I'm sayin'. I feel that a CORR style truck was a great opportunity for them to reinvent their 1:5 scale vehicle in a 4WD format.

I think we will see a 5th scale MT from HPI instead of a CORR style 4WD.

4wd corr exists, just not buy HPI:

I'm sure all you 5B guys are well aware of that though. $1500, no engine or electronics. $2000 gets you a 4wd 1/5 corr truck that runs.

It's pretty obvious that there is a bit of wiggle room in that price if HPI cranked one out. There are just so few, that the price can be set by those that do make them.

$1500 for the RTR 2wd buggy that is similar to the 5B:

Considering you can get the 5B at tower for $980, it shows there's a bit of wiggle room in those prices. Are the FG rigs just built tougher or is the price just a price for a name?

Sorry... kind of spun this thread in a different direction.

Biggest problem with FG's and MCD's is the availability of parts which are just as pricey as the rigs themselves.

If HPI hadn't come out with the Baja, I would have never gotten a gasser. They brought 5th scale to the masses and haven't looked back.

Agreed. They definately should take it a step further though. I wonder what the're target price range would be for a 4wd gasser? What would you be willing to shell out for a 4WD fuelie from HPI?

Well... at this point, I wouldn't buy one right off, but I'd be much more willing to save up and buy one if it was from HPI. Like RobMob said, parts availability is where selling large numbers comes from. If you can't buy parts, then whats the point in buying the rig at all?

I think the 5T is an awsome truck. I have raced nitro 1/8 scale for years. Both 2 wheel and 4 wheel. The 5T handles like a dream. The best thing I like about this truck is that you have to "drive" it. If you can drive this truck you can drive anything. I love the challange.
