It's time to start another painting endeavor. I've decided to take a short break from Lexan and hop over to this 80 series Land Cruiser body my hubby for me for xmas.

I've been looking at paints today. I've decided to use a combination rattle can and air brush for this since it's quite a large body.

The goal is to make it the mini-me of my 1:1 Cruiser. I'm hoping to somewhat match the metallic red; I'm certain I'll need a combo of colors to tame any bright red.

Current thinking - after the primer coat:
  • Tamiya TS-94 metallic grey; as a base
  • Tamiya TS-39 Mica Red; with the grey undertones to darken it.
  • Detail work (black fenders, grille, side striping etc) will be done with airbrush acrylic paints.
  • Still debating painting the teal side decals on or making decals of my own and applying once painted.

Wheels and bumper will eventually be black once I get them refinished.

If anyone has insight on how to achieve a deeper red than what I thought of, I'm open to ideas!
I originally thought black as a base, but thought it could be too dark.

Use test parts, plastic containers, lids... to see what the base and top effects look like before you paint the body.

Your 1:1 looks great!!!
The flake in the paint really shines! I like that red color a lot. It goes great with the blue and black too.

Very cool project!!! :cool::thumbs-up:

Yea, I'll test before I commit to the real paint job. I'll start ordering my paint so I can get this thing underway!

And thanks! She's really looking good. Just those wheels 🥴...I need to get them refinished. First car that I've ever had where I've been approached by people to buy it off me 😄

Sweeet!

This should be good 😊
And lucky you! You have a bunch of "stiffeners" you can remove from that body for tests.

I also think those wheels on your 1:1 would look great being refinished. You mentioned plastic restoration, have you tried a "back to black" type detailer treatment? I have some in a bottle that looks like wax or compound. It's amazing!! 😍

Yea, plenty of those braces I can trim out to test colors.

For the wheels, the plan is to get the powdercoated black. I may also powdercoat the front bumper black too. If not, I'll sand, primer it and use some SEM auto paint black on it.

I have used back to black, that stuff works wonders!
