hey all, i recently got an sts d30m, and the sts pipe to match. i am running it in my savage. i dont even have a half gallon of fuel through it, and today it started acting funny. it was running fine, and i refueled it while it was running, and i gave it a lil rev to make sure it was going to stay running, and i got about 30 feet away and i went to whip around and come back, and half way turned around it died. i managed to get it fired again, but it did it again. i had to get ready for work, so i put in the after run oil, and packed it up. i took it with me to work to run at break, and first off, it didnt really want to start, and when it did, it ran good for about 15 seconds, then died. when i started it again, it sounded like it was incredibly rich (could hold it wot and would just kinda sputter and barely move) and if it would idle, it sounded really quiet, like you were trying to run it with the pipe plugged or something. does anyone have any clues? judging by the way my motor sounds, is it likely that something catastrophic has happened, or is there just some "gremlin" i need to fix, like a clutch bell bearing or something small like that.
thanks in advance for any help! i have had nothing but trouble with this hobby. i really like it, i think it is super cool, but it is putting me in the poor house, and i think this might be the last straw!

you may have flooded it. Take out the glow plug and give it a few tugs. Then get it fired again and just re-tune it. It sounds too rich, lean the HSN off by 1/8 of a turn and try leaning off the LSN by 1/8
also watch those temps

Don't give up on it mate, if it's costing too much then buy an electric car and go racing you will have hardly any problems and it should be smooth running (always has being for me)

the glow plug could very well be goin on its way out. But it does sound a little rich, flooding itself to kill it.

i forgot to mention, brand new glow plug, tried 2 of them! not fludded either, pulled the plug, cranked over the motor liberally with plug removed. i tried leaning both needles in, just a smidge (even though i was running fine with those settings)
also, i've now broken my 4th pullstart...i think that there is something up with the motor. when i was trying to get it started, it would recoil and smash my finger, cutting it open.

i am seriously at the end of my rope with this thing. i've got alot goin on in my life right now, and this is supposed to be my hobby, and my fun escape from all that is happening right now!

i am begging...pleading if you will...can someone find someone who has this motor, or someone who lives near iowa, wisconsin or illinois who can help me. i really enjoy this hobby, but if this is how it really goes, and how much it costs on the average, then i'm out! :help:

Now, when it dies, is it nearly at idle or is it kinda in the powerband?

might have to pull the mill apart and inspect it. If you find anything wrong, send it to STS.

I've had engines change their tune while running due to worn/poorly fitting carb needle seals. Check the settings of your carb by taking a look at the manual to figure out base settings, then figure out where yours are at. Typically 4 turns out from bottom for HSN and flush with housing for the LSN, but I don't know for that engine specifically.

Your needles may be moving on you.

well the only amount that i could get it running, it would just die, whether i give it throttle or not. its the sound that its making that is wierd to me...it sounds completely dead...it sounds like your holding your finger over the exhaust stinger while it is running (it would normally die imidiately, but i recognize the sound from when i had a roto start...that is how i used to prime my hpi motor)

Have you done the pinch test on the LSN?

Basically.. pinch the fuel line on as close to the nipple going to the carb. If it dies near instantly less than 3 seconds, then the LSN is too lean. Richen it up. If it sputters to die and takes more than 5 seconds to die, the LSN is too rich. Lean out the LSN.

As always, do your changes in increments of 1/12 or 1 hour at a time. Run it around to make sure the change is not causing other problems. You may need to adjust your other needles.

Let us know.

revert to these settings:

LSN -- 4.5 turns out from close
HSN -- 3 turns out from close
Idle -- 0.5mm open
